Our work focuses on issues such as affordable housing and homelessness; workforce training and living-wage jobs; pandemic response and health equity; education reform and digital access; public safety and justice reform; climate resilience and green infrastructure; and more.

FUSE has worked on over 250 projects in 42 cities and counties across 18 states serving a combined population of 25 million people. The majority of our alumni continue to work in civic leadership and nearly all our government partners return each year with requests for additional projects.

FUSE Executive Fellow Yolanda R. Owens, CFRM, participated in the Accelerating Community Investment (ACI) Initiative in January, where she discussed potential partnerships for economic development in Jackson, MS. 

Owens is supporting the Jackson Redevelopment Authority (JRA) in revitalizing the Farish Street Historic District as part of her FUSE Fellowship. These partnerships are instrumental in leveraging resources and expertise to drive sustainable change in underserved communities.

"The economic and environmental revitalization of this district would stimulate overall economic growth in the Jackson area," Owen says, "It would also pay homage to the legacy of those who built such a thriving community in the face of crippling segregation of the Jim Crow era."

FUSE Fellow Katie Hunt explained these terms to youth & adults at the NC Youth Climate Summit at the Museum of Life and Science.

Katie asked participants to place stickers by new services they want to see in Durham. 

 "It was fantastic engaging with students who want to make a difference for their communities and the planet through sustainability," Hunt said. "The students were very interested in recycling and reuse and want to be part of the circular economy."

The SMART project in Chatham County enhances community resilience by improving transportation connectivity in historically disadvantaged areas. Chatham County is partnering with FUSE to address gaps in transportation, homelessness, and affordable housing, aiming to improve microtransit policy development in the region through collaboration with Chatham Area Transit Authority (CAT), academic institutions, and industry experts.

In this partner highlight, we interviewed Mary Moskowitz, AICP, CPM, the chief of planning and infrastructure development of CAT, and Faye DiMassimo, FAICP, the executive director and CEO of CAT, about the intersectional impacts a micro-transit system will have on Chatham County neighborhoods and how a FUSE Executive Fellow will help support these goals through the Expanding Electrified Public Transit to Connect Affordable Housing project.
