The Good Food Institute (GFI) is a nonprofit organization that promotes plant- and cell-based alternatives to animal products, particularly meat, dairy, and eggs. It was created in 2016 with the mission to address the negative impacts of global animal agriculture and make alternative proteins accessible, affordable, and delicious. GFI engages in strategic support, scientific research, and market research to advance the alternative protein industry.

The EU, as part of the European Innovation Council's Work Programme 2024, is investing €50 million to assist start-ups in scaling up the production of food from precision fermentation and algae. This funding, part of the EIC's Accelerator Challenge, aims to back the development of "viable alternatives that complement agriculture," producing protein-rich and nutrient-dense foods. “It’s very welcome that this funding aims to develop new ways of scaling up production – tackling Europe’s lack of infrastructure – and to look at other critical areas such as consumer acceptance, regulatory approval and supporting the entry of these foods into the European market,” said Acacia Smith, GFI Europe's senior policy manager.

Public funding will play an important role in scaling the #alternativeprotein sector. GFI recently hosted a webinar with the U.S. Department of Energy Loan Program Office to cover the Title 17 Clean Energy Financing Program, which provides loan guarantees for innovative manufacturing facility projects based in the US that support clean energy deployment and industrial decarbonization.

Up until a few years ago, #alternativeproteins were rarely discussed at major climate conferences, and their presence in programming and meals was limited. In 2023, there was a significant uptick in interest and understanding of food's climate impact, with a growing focus on the role alternative proteins can play.
