The Kerala Society of Ophthalmic Surgeons held a two-day leadership training camp at the Isola d' Coco Resort in Poovar, Trivandrum, on October 5th and 6th. This unique program distinguishes us as the only state ophthalmic society to conduct a leadership development initiative. The camp saw the participation of 24 enthusiastic ophthalmologists from across Kerala. UPDATE ON MEDICAL RETINA 7-8 September 2024, Grand Hyatt Bolgatty, Kochi. SUMMARY Retinal diseases are increasing in our population constituting a major cause of preventable blindness. The causes are manifold like increase in diabetic population leading to diabetic retinopathy, increase in life span and elderly population leading to age related macular degeneration, and better survival of very low birth weight babies leading to retinopathy of prematurity. Unfortunately, there are only less than 100 retina specialists for 35 million population of Kerala. This ultimately leads to delayed diagnosis and blinding complications. What we need is a good number of trained medical retina specialists who can diagnose retinal diseases and treat with laser and injections. There are new developments in the medical retina field which also our specialists should be aware of. Update on Medical Retina was a well curated extensive two day continuing medical education program aimed at training our budding retina specialists. This consists of hands on workshops on lasers and intravitreal injections, workshops on management strategies in common retinal conditions like diabetic retinopathy, age related macular degeneration, retinopathy of prematurity etc. New lasers like Micropulse laser and new drugs for intravitreal injections were covered in the topics. World renowned faculties participated in the symposium and workshops. They include Dr Kenneth Fong from Malaysia, Dr Mahesh Shanmugam from Bengaluru, Dr Dinesh Talwar and Dr Vinodkumar from New Delhi, Dr Rajiv Raman from Chennai, Dr Ajoy Vincent from Canada, Dr George Manayath from Coimbatore, Dr Shobha Sivaprasad from Moorefields London, Dr Noemi Lois from UK, and Dr Argyrios Chronopoulos from Germany, Dr Kelvin Teo from Singapore, Dr Vignesh TP from Madurai and experts from the state and Giridhar Eye Institute. The program is directed by Dr Giridhar, Dr Mahesh and Dr Jyothiprakash Vyas from Giridhar eye institute Kochi. Symposium was inaugurated by Dr Thomas Cherian who is the president of Kerala Society of Ophthalmic Surgeons and Senior Ophthalmologist Dr Joggy Joseph was honored in the meeting. The SSM oration award was presented to Dr Mahesh P Shanmugam from Bengaluru for his outstanding work in the field. Over 150 delegates participated in the conference.
