Our GRA team was warmly welcomed in Columbus, Ga., yesterday by GRA Trustee Jim Hillenbrand, president and CEO of the W.C. Bradley Company, as well as Columbus Mayor Skip Henderson, III, and other community leaders. We learned about the growth trajectory of the city and region and heard enlightening presentations from GRA member Mercer University . Our travels around Georgia always bring new ideas for how growing university research and entrepreneurship can positively impact communities and people.

A new study at Emory University has uncovered a troubling resilience in Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a dangerous pathogen that can cause severe infections, especially in vulnerable populations. Found in many environments, including hospitals, the pathogen is showing resistance to commonly used disinfectants. The lab of GRA Distinguished Investigator Bill Wuest tested the disinfectants on 20 drug-resistant strains of P. aeruginosa. Alarmingly, all strains at least partially resisted, with 80% fully resisting the disinfectants. https://bit.ly/3O1uq3i

Two organizations for the semiconductor industry announced today that GRA Eminent Scholar Suman Datta of Georgia Institute of Technology is the recipient of this year’s University Research Award for Technology. The award is given to researchers “who demonstrate excellence in advancing research in semiconductor technology and design.” Datta has shaped new paradigms in computing and uses cutting-edge techniques in nanotechnology and computer-aided design to develop higher-performing semiconductors. His collaborations with material scientists have yielded new materials that have transformed semiconductor technology into what was once thought impossible. ICYMI: The enormously challenging work of developing antibodies as therapies may be getting easier. That’s because a new tool developed by GRA Eminent Scholar Jeffrey Skolnick and his Georgia Tech colleague Mu Gao can help predict how certain antibodies will interact with viruses, bacteria and other antigens. They tried the tool on 1,000 potential antibodies for the spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus — and it correctly picked 90% of the best antibodies. The tool is called AF2Complex, and it combines AI and big data to generate deep learning. Check it out: https://bit.ly/4huP3T4

TIME Magazine has named its “Best Inventions of 2024” – and one of them is the early diagnostic for autism developed at Emory University. The diagnostic, called EarliPoint, emerged from the research of GRA Eminent Scholar Ami Klin and colleague Warren Jones – and was brought to the clinic by GRA-backed EarliTec. All of us at GRA join millions of others in mourning the passing of Bernie Marcus ( https://bit.ly/4fyiJg6 ). One of Georgia’s greatest philanthropists of all time, Bernie made it possible for scientists to explore new worlds and break new ground in discovery. One of his legacies, the Billi and Bernie Marcus Foundation, has been a cherished supporter of GRA. The days ahead will bring many tributes to the ways Bernie and his family made a profound impact on our state and world. We add our sentiments to honor this good and generous man.
