As the drive towards sustainability continues throughout this 'Decade of Action', greater amounts of resources (including rare earth and critical minerals) are required to transition the world towards a 'Net Zero' future. Deep on our oceans floors, rare and precious minerals exist in abundance, with more and more mining companies turning their minds towards potentially mining these sources. Even though few have been granted rights, there has been growing concerns that deep sea mining can have significant, long-lasting, negative environmental consequences, impacting upon generations to come. From a financial perspective, in a study titled 'Race to the Bottom', Planet Tracker states that countries would receive minimal - if not trivial - financial benefits from deep sea mining activities. Whilst the underlying analysis within the study has been deemed to be simplistic by some, the 'Race to the Bottom' paper has been recently accompanied by another paper titled 'Mining for Trouble' from the same group. Within this most recent paper, Planet Tracker goes onto to state that "...if deep sea metals were to enter the market, global prices of copper, cobalt, nickel and manganese could decline." Furthermore, "...five of the 12 countries identified in this analysis were categorised by the World Bank as lower middle income in 2023, [where]...these countries are likely to be less well equipped to deal with the negative economic impacts that deep sea mining-related price shocks may bring." The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM)

Construction currently accounts for ~40% of global energy and industrial-related CO2 emissions. Roughly 85% of these emissions stems from utilisation of fossil fuels, with the remainder mainly related to the production of construction materials themselves. As projections indicate that construction related emissions will rise by a further 13% globally without additional mitigation and/or adaption efforts, the path to achieving global climate goals, let alone a low emissions future, is strongly correlated to a more sustainable, global construction industry. Earlier this year, the IFC issued the report titled Building Green - Sustainable Construction in Emerging Markets. The aim of the report is to help guide international efforts to decarbonise construction value chains via comprehensive analysis as well as offering important recommendations. With emerging markets accounting for approximately 30% of the global construction value chain emissions, the report notes that: 🌎 Deployment of improved technologies could reverse projected emissions growth from construction value chains, requiring USD$3.5tn in global investment between 2022 and 2035; 🌎 Such technologies centre around construction materials including 'green cement' and 'green-steel'; improved utilisation of carbon-capture; enhanced use of sustainable products like that in mass timber construction and integrating recycled materials more effectively; 🌎 Decarbonizing construction value chains will entail short-term trade-offs for long term benefits; 🌎 Global domestic and foreign private green debt finance for construction decarbonization increased twenty-fold over the last five years; 🌎 Such financial instruments included green bonds, sustainability bonds and sustainability-linked bonds; 🌎 Yet emerging markets receive only a small share (~10%) of domestic and foreign green finance for decarbonizing construction. The Inter-agency Task Force on Financing for Development (IATFFD) is a United Nations initiative comprised of over fifty UN agencies, programmes and offices. Per Paragraph 133 of the Addis Agenda, it is mandated to report annually on progress in meeting the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda as well as advise on recommendations for corrective action where gaps have been identified. In its most recent report into sustainable development financing titled "Financing for Sustainable Development Report 2024", the IATFFD noted that the promise of the Addis Ababa Action Agenda aligning financial resources remains largely unfulfilled. Further, the report states that the past four years have increased the financing needs of developing countries, where the financing gaps for those countries now stands at USD$4tn each and every year. Partly sombre in tone, the report highlights that whilst as high as financing gap estimates are, they pale in comparison to the costs of inaction. Yet whilst financing is the challenge, it also provides part of the solution, with the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development - to be held in Spain in mid-2025 - providing a unique opportunity to commit to reforms and close the gap between aspiration and financing. Noting time is of the essence, the report further states: 🌍 The world is severely off track to achieve the SDGs by 2030; 🌎 Financing challenges are at the heart of the current sustainable development crisis; 🌏 Progress is woefully insufficient on SDG13 (Climate Action), especially as disasters are becoming more frequent and intense, with losses, damages and recover costs increasing; 🌍 Whilst notable progress in sustainable finance has been made over the last 25 years, it has not kept pace with rising financing needs in an increasingly challenging global economic environment; and 🌏 Many developing countries have less access to contingency financing in times of need, constraining their ability to respond to and recover from shocks. In its second edition of the State and Trends of International Carbon Markets report, the World Bank Group highlighted that 2023 witnessed a significant market value adjustment of the voluntary carbon credit market, a drop that was primarily attributed to broadly felt environmental integrity concerns of carbon credit issuances. Whilst there are several other challenges for the voluntary carbon market, what was also affirmed is that stakeholders are undertaking steps to restore trust and transparency, with initiatives showing promise. The 2024 report also stated that: 🌎 Well-designed, high integrity carbon markets can (and do) play a pivotal role in financing climate action in developing countries; 🌎 For creditability and trust, carbon markets activity needs to be governed by a clear and robust institutional framework; 🌎 Clearly defining the legal nature of carbon credits is essential for financiers; 🌎 An indicator of progress in the market is the increased sophistication of buyers, their direct involvement in project due diligence and their preference for high-quality investments; 🌎 Specifically, such buyers are willing to pay large premiums for credits with perceived higher quality and development impact; 🌎 84% of listed companies are not on track to meet their net-zero goals; 🌎 Countries must aim to develop policy frameworks that enable the broader use of carbon credits and address policy elements that support such usage; and 🌎 Various insurance providers are emerging to address different high-severity, low-frequency risks.
