Trail maintenance, campground upgrades, daily educational sessions, and community building—Groundwork youth are doing it all this summer in Grand Tetons National Park!

At Groundwork USA, we proudly partner with the National Park Service to create hands-on learning experiences for our Green Team and GroundCorps members. Each year, we organize at least four immersive, nine-day trips to locations like Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National Park, and Gateway National Recreation Area. During these trips, youth participate in conservation projects, learn about the history and culture of the sites, explore land management practices, and discover potential career paths in the field.

Across the country, thousands of overlooked and neglected spaces are waiting to be transformed into vibrant urban gardens, trails, bike paths, and parks. 🌳 

However, transformation isn't just about the physical change. Without careful planning and community input, land reuse projects risk leading to displacement and failure.

Through her work on our Technical Assistance program, Jalisa Gilmore collaborates with numerous organizations to advance land reuse projects. Groundwork Ohio River Valley is making strides in nurturing the next generation of environmental professionals! 🙌 

This year, they teamed up with the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden for their third annual Horticulture Career Day! Sierra Hayden, the director of Groundwork ORV’s Green Team, emphasized the significance of the event:

“This is a chance to take that little bit of experience working in horticulture this summer and see if there’s a career that matches that interest. It’s also a great opportunity to talk, to sell themselves, and see what the future could look like for them within the environmental realm.”

This collaborative event not only provided insights into traditional green careers but also highlighted the diverse possibilities a career in horticulture can offer.

The Emerald Trail is more than parks and trails; it's a bridge to brighter economic futures for residents in Jacksonville. 

In Jacksonville, FL, once vibrant African American neighborhoods like LaVilla face significant challenges from past redlining and freeway construction. Today, 34% of the 79,000 residents live below the poverty line, and nearly 10% are unemployed.

✅ The Emerald Trail Initiative, led by Groundwork Jacksonville and the City of Jacksonville, is reconnecting neighborhoods through parks, trails, and green space. But beyond creating green spaces, the initiative also leads to new job opportunities for residents through a Pre-Apprenticeship Program.

✅ The Emerald Trail Stewards (ETS) Pre-Apprenticeship Program offers residents hands-on job training, green job opportunities, industry-recognized credentials, career guidance, and more.

This program is just the start. The ETS program aims to lay a solid foundation for individuals to continue thriving in the field. “This isn’t just a job,” says Janet Reagor, COO of GW Jacksonville. “We’re hoping the program really paves a career pathway for participants.”
