-Improving community level social and economic conditions that promote overall physical, mental and emotional well-being, with a special focus on economic prosperity and affordable housing issues.

As part of the recent funding provided by Health Foundation of South Florida , Dade County Street Response (DCSR) is set to expand its vital urgent and preventive medical care services. We are highlighting the importance of this initiative in confronting South Florida's health equity crisis. Dade County Street Response is dedicated to addressing the needs of vulnerable communities by offering essential medical care, case management, community programs, legal advocacy, and medical education. Their stand-alone clinic in Liberty City will specifically serve low-income, working individuals, ensuring access to care is within reach for those who need it most. Our luncheon programs and afternoon fireside chat at the 2024 Black Health Summit spotlighted the Imperative for Improving Health Access for Black Men. The luncheon sessions included: “The Status of Black Men’s Health in Florida” presented by cheryl holder MD, Executive Director, Florida Clinicians for Climate Action; and “When We See Them: How We Rise Up to Meet Black Men and Boys in Their Intentions for Radical Healing” featuring Luther Brewster Jr., PhD, General Partner at WellUp, Sr. Executive Dean, Community Health Innovation at Roseman University of Health Sciences, and Wizdom Powell,PhD, MPH, CMHC Chief Purpose Officer, Headspace. Black men in the United States have a significantly lower life expectancy compared to White men, primarily driven by higher rates of prostate cancer, kidney disease, hypertension, and diabetes. Despite the severe impact of these diseases, Black men often avoid the healthcare system due to trauma and deep-seated mistrust. In response to these challenges, healthcare and public health leaders must approach and engage the community directly, recognizing their capacity for solutions and building a healthcare system tailored to their needs from an early stage. As with each of the broad themes that emerged from the 2024 Black Health Summit, the Imperative for Improving Health Access for Black Men calls for exploration, collaboration, and investment—and provides an opportunity for all of us to take individual and collective steps to bring the future we envision to life. Insuring More Miami-Dade Residents project. With support from the Health Foundation, this initiative aims to significantly reduce the number of uninsured, low-wealth residents in Miami-Dade County and ensure access to essential healthcare services for those who need it most. The project involves establishing and expanding strong referral partnerships with local hospitals, community-based organizations, and educational institutions. In addition, Catalyst Miami is actively engaged in community outreach. It conducts informative group sessions to educate and empower target communities on crucial health access issues, such as health insurance enrollment and coverage retention. This initiative aims to increase awareness and accessibility of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies and tax credits. Its mission is to empower Broward residents with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their healthcare coverage by focusing on education and streamlining the enrollment process. The Health Foundation of South Florida has consistently prioritized addressing healthcare disparities that the Black community faces in South Florida. The Black Health Summit has been a vital part of our efforts, bringing together health equity experts, advocates, private and public sectors, and community-based organizations to explore critical topics such as Black maternal health, climate change, community trauma and violence, political determinants of health, and Black men’s health. Focused on fostering collaboration and driving systemic change, the Summits have facilitated partnerships between various stakeholders committed to addressing the root causes of inequities. Through these efforts, the Health Foundation strives to inform, encourage, and empower local and philanthropic organizations to contribute to more inclusive and equitable communities for all South Floridians. Several interconnected issues emerged throughout the day across the keynote addresses, panel discussions, and the dialogue with our esteemed Summit attendees. 1.
