👁️ 31 children received eye screenings and dozens of parents gained essential eye health knowledge at a recent special #WorldSightDay event we organised with the China National Children’s Center and the China National Preventing-Blindness Leading Committee. Dora Giusti, Director of Child Protection at UNICEF China , shared powerful insights on the link between disability inclusion, early child development, and eye health. #NEWS : We've been in Port Moresby this week to help break the ground for a new Centre for Eye Health that will train eye care specialists and provide life-changing eye care to communities across Papua New Guinea. Only 7 of 22 PNG provinces have an eye doctor and this new centre will transform countless lives, especially for women and girls who make up 61 per cent of blindness cases in the country. A huge thanks to the Australian Government for its significant $2.82 million investment in the Centre for Eye Health, alongside contributions from the Governments of New Zealand and PNG. This collaboration underscores Australia's commitment to advancing eye health and sustainable development in the region. Today marks a pivotal moment with the release of findings from the Rapid Assessment for Avoidable Blindness (RAAB) study conducted across 15 counties in Kenya. This comprehensive study, supported by The Christian Blind Mission and The Fred Hollows Foundation, sheds light on the current state of preventable blindness in the region. The study revealed a substantial reduction in the burden of blindness from 0.7% in the 1990s to a current rate of 0.37%. 🔎OCTOBER HIGHLIGHTS! 👁 In celebration of #WorldSightDay in Inner Mongolia, The Fred Hollows Foundation China provided essential eye health education and services to 8,662 schoolchildren across 8 schools and 362 adults in 6 communities. Over the month, more than 50 community health workers and village doctors were trained, while cataract surgeons, surgical nurses, and refractionists advanced their skills through hospital-based training. Australia’s first Aboriginal ophthalmologist, Dr. Kris Rallah-Baker, says to reach population parity, "we need another 40 of me."
