Celebrating President Jimmy Carter’s 100th Birthday: A Legacy of Leadership and Global Health Impact As President Jimmy Carter celebrates his 100th birthday, we honor his remarkable dedication to global health, especially his groundbreaking efforts to combat onchocerciasis and other neglected tropical diseases. Through the Carter Center, President Carter has been instrumental in leading initiatives to control and eliminate onchocerciasis, a significant cause of preventable blindness in many African nations. The International Eye Foundation (IEF) is proud to have partnered with the National Onchocerciasis Control Program, playing a key role in distributing Mectizan in the Adamaoua and South Provinces of Cameroon. Over the past two decades, these efforts have yielded remarkable results, reducing the prevalence of this debilitating disease to just 1% in Adamaoua Province. The success of this program would not have been possible without the leadership and steadfast support of President Carter and the Carter Center. Their commitment to improving public health in underserved areas and strong collaboration from the Cameroonian government and international partners highlight the power of sustained, focused efforts. These interventions improve lives and contribute knowledge and insights as we strive to achieve global eye health goals by 2030. Special thanks go to all those in Cameroon who played vital roles in supporting IEF’s mission—Ministry of Health, the Mectizan Donation Program, Helen Keller International, the Higher Institute for Scientific and Medical Research (ISM), and the dedicated IEF team: the Patrice Nkwelle family, Augustin Engama, Cedric Messambe, Alexis Nkouelle, Nicolas Njoumbe, Augustin Monentcham, Eugene Thierry Medoua, and Caira Grey-Johnson. Please share your thoughts on strengthening systems, financing reforms, scale and sustainability, training and retaining personnel, expanding infrastructure, supply chain, using new technology, directly engaging beneficiaries, innovative collaboration and partnerships, and generating evidence on what works. These strategies must come together to improve health, specifically eye care.
