During college, I remember joining several courses 2-3 weeks into the semester. I felt like I was sprinting to catch a train that had already left the station. Everyone else knew the syllabus and had already acclimated to the professor's mannerisms -- I, on the other hand, was drowning from a firehose of information. 

On the last day of National Transfer Student Week, I am reflecting on the  effects of jumping into a college experience midway through. 

Roughly 2 million students transfer colleges in America each year. My mother was one of them over 5 decades ago. In fact, she is at her 50th year college reunion in California this week.

When she transferred, there were few support structures in place -- no orientation, no specialized advising, no peer mentoring programs. She missed the train and had to sprint to catch up.

Transfer student success has certainly come a long way in the last half-century and I am grateful to have watched leaders like Alfred Herrera, Samantha McAuliffe-Raynor, and Heather Adams, Ed.D champions new paradigms in just last few years.

There is more work to be done, but I know my mother would feel infinitely more seen and supported at her alma mater today.
