Staff Spotlight: April Maas discovered her passion for fundraising through her participation in a dance marathon event while in college.

Having a mission-driven career was important to her, which was one of the many things that drew her to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK).

“Raising money for research is imperative in the fight against cancer,” April says. “Fundraising at MSK gives our patients and their families a way to feel that they can support MSK in a tangible way.”

April, the Director of Community Fundraising in Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK)’s Development Office, works with individuals who fundraise for MSK through activities such as galas, bake sales, tribute campaigns, and crowdfunding, such as Comedy vs Cancer and NYC for MSK.
 
Throughout her decade-long tenure at MSK, she has developed strong relationships with many members of MSK’s donor community for which she feels grateful.

April is also proud of her career longevity at MSK, and how the organization has evolved over her ten years working here. She shares, “I have seen MSK go through a lot of positive changes. I was able to be an active participant in some of these changes and look forward to continuing to make an impact in our future.”

Dr. Mrinal Gounder, a sarcoma medical oncologist & early drug development specialist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK), joined colleagues from the United States and India to participate in the first ever United States-India Cancer Moonshot Dialogue in New Delhi this week. Leading experts, researchers, policymakers, regulators and advocates from both countries met to share their latest research and explore innovative solutions to cancer prevention and treatment. 

The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy invited Dr. Gounder to join the meeting because of his co-leadership with Dr. Atul Batra on Project Jeevan (“Life” in Hindi), which aims to accelerate access to innovative cancer clinical trials for patients in India. Despite India comprising nearly 20% of the world's population, it hosts only 1.5% of global clinical trials.

New research from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) found patients with non-small cell lung cancer brain metastases may benefit from up-front stereotactic radiosurgery; identified a connection between antibiotic use and autoimmune diseases; and uncovered a previously unknown structural role for messenger RNAs in the cytoplasm of cells. A new CAR T cell therapy has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for resistant mantle cell lymphoma, based on results from a clinical trial led by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) hematologist-oncologist Dr. Lia Palomba.

“We now have a good option for a type of lymphoma that has been very difficult to treat when other therapies fail,” Dr. Palomba says. “This is urgently needed because the disease grows more resistant every time it comes back.”

In recognition of the Olympics coming to a close, we are highlighting one of our MSK colleagues who's made a major splash – both at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) and past Olympics events. 

Dr. Valeria Silva Merea, an MSK laryngologist and two-time Olympic swimmer, comes from a long line of athletes. “Both of my parents played volleyball, and my mom competed in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal in the sport.” 

But Dr. Silva chose the pool. She began swimming when she was five years old and started competing just two years later. “I fell in love with the water and challenging myself in the pool’,” she says. 

After narrowly missing the qualifying time for the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, she felt more motivated to improve, especially on the international stage. She went on to compete in the 100m breaststroke in both the 2004 Olympics in Athens and the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, representing her home country, Peru. 

“It was a true dream, and two of the best days of my life,” she said. 

She’s since used that determination and dedication when treating patients at MSK. 

“There are certainly parallels between my current work and competing and training for the Olympics,” Dr. Silva says. “It’s similar in that there’s a team of people behind you, supporting you. For the Olympics, you have coaches, trainers, your family, sports psychologists. Here at MSK, I have my nurses, disease management team, coordinators, and more coming together to provide the best possible care for the patient.”

Dr. Silva continues to swim recreationally, and loves spending time with her 3-year-old son and her husband.

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) played a key role in the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Oncologic Drugs Advisory Committee’s landmark decision to accept measurable residual disease (MRD) as an intermediate clinical endpoint for accelerated approval of new drugs and indications in multiple myeloma clinical trials.

A team of researchers led by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) and collaborators at Emory University are shedding new light on deadly fungal infections that develop in bone marrow transplant patients

“This was truly a global collaboration with the aim of preventing deadly infections in some of our most vulnerable patients,” says Dr. Tobias Hohl, Head of the Infectious Diseases Service at MSK.

The research shows how fungi can bypass the antifungal measures by developing resistance that cannot be detected by standard laboratory detection methods.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a new drug that slows the growth of low-grade diffuse gliomas with a certain gene mutation.

"This represents the first new treatment option in low-grade diffuse glioma in more than 20 years.,” says Dr. Ingo Mellinghoff, Chair of Department of Neurology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK), who led a clinical trial showing the drug’s effectiveness.

The drug, vorasidenib, targets a mutation in IDH genes, which are present in 80% of low-grade gliomas. IDH-mutant gliomas make up about 20% of diffuse gliomas in adults, by far the most common malignant primary brain tumors.

Researchers in the Integrative Medicine Service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) are studying the science of acupuncture, and how this approach might help relieve some of the symptoms and side effects commonly experienced by people with cancer.

“Pain is one of the most common and feared symptoms for cancer patients and survivors,” says Dr. Jun Mao, Chief of MSK's Integrative Medicine Service. “There is a critical need to study the evidence so we can make informed recommendations for clinicians and patients."

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted accelerated approval for the immunotherapy afami-cel for the treatment of adults with a rare soft tissue cancer called synovial sarcoma.

Afami-cel is the first engineered T cell therapy to receive FDA approval for a solid tumor cancer.

The clinical trial that resulted in the drug’s approval was led by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) sarcoma specialist and immunotherapy expert Dr. Sandra D'Angelo.

“This treatment offers an important new option for people with this rare cancer,” Dr. D’Angelo says. “It is also an important step forward in the development of T cell therapies for solid tumors, which has been a major challenge.”
