When people hear “bat” they often think of dark caves and spooky stories, but did you know bats play an important role in keeping forests healthy? #BatWeek 🦇 More than half of North American bat species roost in dead and dying trees. Other bat species roost in the foliage of living trees or sites located in or near forests, including caves, cliff faces, bridges, and even old buildings. No matter where they live, almost all bat species rely on forests for survival as places to forage, find water, and seek shelter. But forest health also depends on these night-flying mammals. We’re turning Arizona into the royal flush of mountain biking. 🚵 This past weekend, the NFF and its partners gathered for the 4th annual Highline Hold'em Mountain Bike Poker Run on the Tonto National Forest! Riders are shuttled from the Landmark Restaurant in Christopher Creek up to the 260 Trailhead, where they ride the iconic Highline Trail to the See Canyon Trailhead and then back to the restaurant. Along the way, riders receive seven playing cards to create a five-card poker hand. Once back at the Landmark, the top poker hands have their choice of prizes. Proceeds from the Highline Hold'em go to the NFF's Highline Trail Restoration Initiative. Once completed, the Highline Trail will boast over 60 miles of continuous singletrack stretching from the 260 Trailhead to Pine along the base of the Mogollon Rim. USDA Forest Service

The NFF has been hard at work this year! Check out some highlights from the grand opening event of a completed project that our amazing Southern California field staff managed through crucial partnerships and community support. The Cha’chaany Hamuk Trailhead reopened in May of this year and now provides improved access for recreationalists and emergency services, while also honoring the Indigenous history of this place with a new name for the trailhead. The project was funded through a partnership between the National Forest Foundation , the Cleveland National Forest, the Wildlife Conservation Board 's Public Access Grant Program, the San Diego River Conservancy, Gavin Newsom, Governor of California, and Wade Crowfoot, California Secretary of Natural Resources.
