Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) is an international news organization headquartered in Prague, Czech Republic and Washington, D.C., with bureaus throughout Central Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, and Eurasia. RFE/RL provides accurate, uncensored news and open debate in countries where a free press is threatened and disinformation is pervasive. They have over 700 full-time journalists and 1,300 freelancers, making it one of the most comprehensive news operations in the world.

The Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty Board of Directors has named Steve Capus as the company's Acting President, effective January 1, 2024.

Capus will replace Board Member Jeff Gedmin, who has led RFE/RL as Acting President since July.

On the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, we stand with imprisoned Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty journalists Alsu Kurmasheva, Ihar Losik, Andrey Kuznechyk, and Vladyslav Yesypenko. They must be released to their families. Journalism is not a crime. 

Alsu Kurmasheva, a journalist with RFE/RL's Tatar-Bashkir Service, has been unjustly detained in Russia, since October 18. Alsu was charged with failure to register as a foreign agent. #FreeAlsu

Ihar Losik is a contributor to Radio Svaboda, RFE/RL's Belarus Service, who has been wrongfully imprisoned in Belarus since June 2020. Ihar has been held incommunicado for 255 days. His family has not heard from him since February.

Andrey Kuznechyk, a web editor for Radio Svaboda, RFE/RL's Belarus Service, was sentenced to six years in prison in Belarus last year. 

Andrey, a father of two, was convicted on false charges in a closed-door trial.

Vladyslav Yesypenko is a contributor to RFE/RL's Crimea Reporting Project, part of the Ukrainian Service. He was detained in Russian-occupied Crimea by Russia's FSB in March 2021, where he remains imprisoned to this day.
