Safe Kids Worldwide is a global nonprofit dedicated to protecting kids from preventable injuries, the number one cause of death to children in the United States. Around the world, a child dies every 30 seconds from an injury that could have been prevented. Safe Kids is a go-to resource to help parents keep kids safe from car crashes, fires, falls, poisoning and more. Through more than 400 coalitions in the U.S. and partners in more than 30 countries, Safe Kids works with children’s hospitals, trauma centers, first responders and public health experts to get life-saving information to families. Together, we can help all kids grow up healthy and safe. 

We had a blast at the launch of our tour at Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, teaching over 500 YMCA campers, from YMCA of Metropolitan Atlanta essential car and pedestrian safety tips. The debut of our new children’s book, Clifford Takes a Ride, in collaboration with Mercedes-Benz USA and Scholastic featured a reading by Atlanta Falcons Legend Matt Ryan and an appearance from Clifford The Big Red Dog himself! We look forward to reaching more kids and families through our events and distributing copies of the book nationwide.

Check out this great article on Parents.com about today’s release of a new kids’ book  — Clifford Takes A Ride — that makes learning fun by offering families essential safety tips for staying safe in and around cars. Published by Scholastic, the new book is the centerpiece of a national safety campaign we’re launching with our partners at Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA). Over the next month, we’ll distribute 30,000 free copies of the book to families across the country via Mercedes dealerships and Safe Kids Worldwide coalitions.
 
The launch event today at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, part of a four-stop book and safety tour, included a reading by former Atlanta Falcons quarterback and MBUSA brand ambassador Matt Ryan for more than 500 enthusiastic campers from the The Y (YMCA) of Metro Atlanta. In addition, there was a special appearance by Clifford the Big Red Dog, and interactive safety education stations covering passenger, pedestrian, and bike safety, as well as bike rodeo, helmet fittings, games, prizes, and more.

We're excited to announce the launch of our new children’s book, Clifford Takes a Ride, in collaboration with Mercedes-Benz USA and Scholastic! This will be a tool for educators and parents to teach kids about child passenger safety in a fun and engaging way. Knowing that a properly used and installed child safety seat can reduce the risk of injury by as much as 71%, we hope that, by promoting safe behaviors and providing families with safety tips, we can prevent more injuries and save more lives.

I’m so proud of my fantastic team at Safe Kids Worldwide and their unending commitment to keeping the world safe for children. Last week, for National Gun Violence Awareness Day, we all decided to #WearOrange to bring awareness to the hundreds of preventable tragedies that occur as a result of #gunviolence.
 
Roughly a third of American children live in homes with firearms, and 4.6 million live with unlocked, loaded guns. We are a proud partner of Everytown for Gun Safety's Be SMART program to educate families and communities about the vital importance of the safe storage of firearms.
 
Our message to families: If you have guns in your home, keep them out of reach and out of sight of children by storing them securely. Store guns unloaded and secured with effective, child-resistant gun locks in a locked container, out of the reach and sight of children. Keep ammunition in a separate locked container, out of the reach and sight of kids. Use combination locks and safes, or safes that use fingerprint recognition locks. Keep the combinations carefully hidden. When it comes to guns in the home, make safety your number one consideration!

It's National Volunteer Week!  

Our Safe Kids Worldwide President, Torine Creppy, attended Safe Kids Cherokee County's special Car Seat Check. This event marked the 25th anniversary of the terrible crash involving Michele and Brooke Ice, who's car seat had been inspected just two weeks before the crash. Our president presented the Safe Kids Champion Award to individuals involved in saving Brooke's life!

We want to thank all the Safe Kids coordinators, Child Passenger Safety Technicians, and volunteers who make events like these possible across the nation! We want to thank you for your involvement in our mission, for passionately working to promote positive change and reduce the risk of injury, for helping us reach more families and communities.

Our President, Torine (Brooks) Creppy, kicked off the 42nd annual Lifesavers National Conference on Highway Safety Priorities, speaking at the Opening Plenary! Traffic safety professionals from across the globe have come together in Denver, Colorado to focus on strategies to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities on our roads. By sharing our knowledge and experience and taking time to learn from each other's countermeasures and programs, we hope to reach zero fatalities in the United States. Here are some of the highlights from our time at Lifesavers:

Safe Kids Western North Carolina were recognized for their Child Passenger Safety Technician work and received the National Team of the Year Award.

SKW President Torine Creppy moderated a panel discussing the past, present, and future of road safety and spoke during the "Shifting Gears: Changing the Culture of Distracted Driving" session. 

Sadiqa Kendi, MD, MPH, SKW Chief Equity and Medical Officer, spoke during the "Reaching Those Most in Need: Addressing CPS Disparities to Support Vulnerable Populations" session.

Cassandra Herring, SKW Director of Child Occupant Protection, spoke during the "Safety for All: How Vehicle Technology Addresses Underserved Populations" session. 

At our booth, our team educated attendees about child passenger safety, our Safe Kids Injury Risk Index (SKIRI), Safe Kids in Automated Vehicles Alliance (SKAVA), and much more.
