Let's start the week (and the month!) positively with an impressive milestone! 🌟🇲🇿🌍💡 The African Development Bank Group and the Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA) proudly support Mozambique's path to #cleanenergy by approving a $54 million loan for the country's first wind energy project, of which $12 million is from SEFA. 💨🌬️ This is part of a larger financing effort that also includes contributions from the IFC - International Finance Corporation , the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation , the Emerging Africa & Asia Infrastructure Fund , and the Private Infrastructure Development Group's Technical Assistance. The total project cost is estimated at $224.5 million. This funding will support the construction and operation of a 120 MW wind farm in the southern province of #Inhambane , enhancing energy access and sustainability. 🌬️⚡ Why is this significant? The Namaacha wind farm will diversify Mozambique's energy mix, currently dominated by #hydropower and #gas , and contribute to socio-economic growth and job creation. Notably, the project is expected to generate 331.6 GWh and reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 71,816 tons annually, advancing Mozambique's commitments under the #ParisClimateAgreement . 🌱✨ Expected impacts of this project include: 🌍 Creation of 600 jobs during construction, focusing on gender and youth inclusion—120 roles targeted for women and 300 for youth. 🌱 Reduction of #greenhousegasemissions , contributing to #climateaction and #environmentalsustainability . 🔒 Strengthened energy security and diversification of energy sources. 💡 Encouragement of further investments in renewable energy infrastructure. Mozambique's national electricity utility, Eletricidade de Moçambique, will be the sole off-taker from the wind farm, located 50 km west of #Maputo , under a 25-year power purchase agreement. #Renewableenergy is more than just meeting power needs; it fosters inclusive development, creates opportunities, and ensures a greener, more equitable world. 🌞 Advancing Zambia’s Renewable Energy Capacity 🇿🇲🌍 The African Development Bank Group Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA) has approved an $8 million concessional loan to support the development of the 25MW Ilute Solar PV Plant in Zambia’s Western Province. This project, led by Serengeti Energy Africa and Western Solar Power Limited , will be one of the first to use Africa GreenCo as an intermediary off-taker under Zambia’s open grid access framework. The plant will generate solar power to be sold on the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) Day-Ahead Market, providing sustainable energy and contributing to regional renewable energy access. Key details: • 25 MW #solarphotovoltaic (PV) plant in #Sesheke District. • Financing: $8 million SEFA #concessionalloan . • Partners: Serengeti Energy, Western Solar Power Ltd, Africa GreenCo. Expected impact: • Demonstrate electricity trading business model through SAPP. • Enable the private sector to realise Zambia’s solar potential. • Reduce carbon emissions and boost regional renewable energy access #energysecurity . Kevin KARIUKI , African Development Bank Vice President for Power, Energy, Climate Change, and Green Growth opened the 8th Africa Energy Marketplace (AEMP8) in Nigeria this week, themed “Towards Nigeria's Sustainable Energy Future”. #AEMP8 highlighted the collaborative efforts needed to achieve the country’s National Integrated Electricity Policy and Strategic Implementation Plan. Kariuki emphasised the critical juncture of Nigeria's energy sector reform, stating,“We envisage that the reforms underpinned by #AEMP8 and the 2023 #Nigeria Electricity Act will lay the foundation for addressing tariffs, revenue collection, regulatory issues and system losses to generate sufficient revenue.” These reforms are expected to unlock adequate investments in generation, transmission, and distribution networks so that by 2030 all Nigerians have a quality power supply. Wale Shonibare , Director of Energy Financial Solutions, Policy, and Regulation at the African Development Bank, moderated the session on "National Policy Objectives: Sustained NESI Recapitalization." He expressed enthusiasm for the event's success, saying, ”Day 1 of the 8th Africa Energy Marketplace in Abuja has been a tremendous success! The discussions were insightful, focusing on key themes such as universal access, capitalization, reliability, climate change, and creating an enabling environment for business.
