While we’re grateful that City Council restored some of the deep funding cuts to tenant services proposed by Mayor Harrel, what they’ve passed is still about 40% less funding than past years to help keep Seattle residents from losing their homes. This cut could mean that tenant services organizations will be forced to scale back their programs for people on the brink of homelessness at a time when eviction rates are at historic highs and more people are experiencing homelessness than ever before. Solid Ground is committed to finding ways to continue supporting Seattle renters at risk of losing their homes. We are especially grateful to Councilmember Morales for championing efforts to fully fund tenant services, and to Councilmember Moore for her support. https://lnkd.in/gGpQF6k8

Elections have always put organizations like Solid Ground in a difficult position. As a federally registered nonprofit, Solid Ground is prohibited from participating in electoral politics. But as people – staff, volunteers, participants, and supporters – we’re all experiencing strong emotions at this time, including concerns about what this election means for our shared future. Many of us are thinking about what this transition means for our nation, our community, and the people we serve. As monumental as this moment may feel, it does not change the fundamental commitment and passion that brings us together at Solid Ground: building community to end poverty and undo the forces of oppression that cause it – especially racism. And so, in this time of government transition, we will not waver in our work to uplift the people we serve, break down barriers to resources and opportunities, and solve poverty through our services and advocacy. We are prepared to take on any new challenges – or opportunities – that result from this transition. Building community together often requires the grace and presence to see past disagreement and find new ways to build consensus – especially when common ground feels most out of reach. In that spirit, I encourage you to remember that there’s no political or ideological litmus test for our donors, staff, volunteers, or participants. Some will celebrate these results; others will mourn them. For Solid Ground, it’s a time to refocus on the amazing work we have ahead of us, regardless of who is in the White House.
