As one of New York City’s oldest nonprofit alternative art centers, The Kitchen is dedicated to offering emerging and established artists opportunities to create and present new work within, and across, the disciplines of dance, music, theater, visual art, and literature. Recognizing its longstanding legacy for innovation, The Kitchen remains devoted to fostering a community of artists and audiences, offering artists the opportunity to make—and for audiences to engage with—work that pushes the boundaries of artistic disciplines and strengthens meaningful dialogues between the arts and larger culture.

Founded as an artist collective in 1971 by Woody and Steina Vasulka and incorporated as a nonprofit two years later, The Kitchen was among the first American institutions to embrace the emerging fields of video and performance, while presenting visionary new work in established disciplines such as dance, music, literature, and film. This unique combination generated an environment immediately conducive to groundbreaking explorations, helping launch the careers of many artists who have defined the American avant-garde, including Laurie Anderson, Charles Atlas, Lucinda Childs, Bill T. Jones, Robert Longo, Robert Mapplethorpe, Cindy Sherman, Kiki Smith, and Elizabeth Streb, among many others. Today, The Kitchen is an internationally-acclaimed institution supporting artists from every area of culture in the effort to create an art for our time.

The Kitchen is #ISO two new full-time staff members: Media & Technology Manager and Manager of Education and Interpretative Media. Read more below: 

The Media & Technology Manager will manage The Kitchen’s web and IT infrastructure (network, phone system, servers, audio/visual equipment), while also providing technical support to staff and artists, and addressing the various multimedia needs for The Kitchen’s administrative and promotional efforts. Starting salary will be commensurate with experience, within a range of $60,000- $70,000.⁠

The Manager of Education & Interpretative Media will operate at multiple intersections, coordinating across educational institutions and schools to schedule and plan programs, workshops, and events that prioritize learning, discovery, and exchange intersectional with The Kitchen’s interpretive media. Starting salary will be commensurate with experience, within a range of $60,000-70,000.⁠

🌟 Reporting to The Kitchen’s Archivist and Manager of Education, the Archive Fellow will support the implementation of new digital preservation systems, the migration of digital and born-digital assets, and the cataloging of digital objects in Archives Space. Additional tasks may include using professional scanning equipment and entering metadata for posters, calendars, photos, and slides, and assisting in the completion of The Kitchen’s Processing Manual. The Archive Fellow will also engage in independent research within the archive, organizing (2) Archive Spotlights, published on The Kitchen’s website On File, that highlight up to four programs or events under a shared theme.⁠
