What do young people need to be inspired and to thrive in the Age of AI - as individuals, in careers, and in their communities and our democracy? 

Since launching LearnerStudio, the dawn of the Age of AI has come on fast and forcefully. When I asked my teenage daughter about it she said: “Mom, AI is so overwhelmingly present. The whole world is changing so fast. And no one knows what’s happening, let alone kids. But we’re expected to understand and cope with it.” Indeed.  

In this moment of great change, here are our focal questions at LearnerStudio:

What is it that truly makes us human? 

What values and competencies do we most want to protect & cultivate in the Age of AI?

What do young people need to be inspired and to thrive in the Age of AI - as individuals, in careers, and in their communities and our democracy? 

How must we re-architect our education systems in order to meet these needs?

In Robot Proof J.Aoun suggests a new discipline for higher education in the Age of AI called “humanics,” he includes data literacy, technology literacy and “human literacy.” So much to define and unpack in that last one!

Is “humanics” enough of a frame to re-architect our K12 education system? 

Or do we need to create a new sort of unified field theory for K12 that = humanics + the aspirations and mental health needs of young people + science of learning and development + civic needs of our diverse democracy?

We often talk about reenvisioning, reimagining, redesigning, and rethinking educational systems. But such language sometimes obscures more basic questions: How does a learner experience that transformation? What groups need to be involved? What investments do we need? What structures do we need to create? What infrastructure is required? What capacities do we need to develop? What policies do we need to establish?

LearnerStudio is doing critical work to answer these questions, bringing together diverse stakeholders to collaboratively wrestle with questions of practice and design to create a blueprint for redesigning and building a learner-centered, flexible, equitable system of education.

Amidst the launch of their newest learning report "Public-Purpose Utilities for the Future of Learning," we sat down with LearnerStudio’s founder and CEO Kim Smith to learn more about her vision for the third horizon of education, the infrastructure that is needed to develop a future-ready educational ecosystem, and the crucial role of philanthropy in driving innovation.

You can’t tell me it’s impossible to change the way we do school when there are bright spots all around us. 

I recently spent an academic year exploring innovative educational models around the world and was thrilled to see my collaborators at Second Peninsula, LLC doing the same at home.  The result is their new PBS / Brief But Spectacular series that shines a light on some seriously innovative approaches to school that are well underway. 

The series, which features six pioneering institutions, shows us all just how much is possible when we give kids:
 
✨ Responsibility- building a culture of entrepreneurship and ownership over learning.
 
✨ Opportunity- providing tools and tech, but thinking beyond proficiency to bigger possibilities. 
 
✨ Community- forging meaningful social, emotional connections that help students map their minds and hearts and embrace identity.
 
✨ Flexibility- making space for the self-designed paths that uncover purpose.
 
Educators, parents, policy makers, thinkers, fellow dreamers and doers, I encourage you all to watch and share.

We are at a critical moment of inflection for education in America. Because of a historic confluence of factors-- including the COVID disruption, a reckoning with systemic injustice and a hyper-acceleration of technology-- we have an opportunity to re-architect our $800BN education system to truly prepare our young people to thrive in life, careers of the future, and our diverse democracy.

Many important organizations and leaders have been paving the way for this moment, but the whole is not yet greater than the sum of its parts. Timing matters and this opportunity could be lost if we do not act boldly and with intention to center equity and public purpose.
