“My administration background, along with my nursing degree, has given me insight into the financial side of the business and the patient care of those we serve,” he explains. “I’m old school with my management philosophy and believe that to lead the team, you have to be present. When our patients and staff are well taken care of, that affords me a greater sense of accomplishment.” According to Ken, Michelle H., Chief Nurse Executive, promotes a culture of strong nursing care and optimal outcomes for patients. “We can positively impact patients’ lives at UH, and that’s motivating.”
 
Ken has been on various committees at UH, including being a guest panelist for the Nurse Leader Residency Roundtable, and serves the organization beyond just Home Care. “UH supports growth by encouraging leaders to serve the community,” he says. He would encourage others to consider a career with University Hospitals, saying, “I’m proud to work with such a dynamic group of individuals at UH and promote the incredible care we deliver each day.” In fact, his daughter recently graduated from nursing school and became part of the UH team, working on a Labor and Delivery floor. “We have great stories to share at the dinner table!”

Prostate enlargement is common in men over 50 and can lead to urinary dysfunction as well as bladder or kidney problems. Historically, there wasn’t much that could be done, and even treatments developed a century ago were often complicated. Recovery could last several weeks, with the patient enduring restrictions and discomfort during that time.

Thankfully, today there are other options to deal with enlarged prostates. At UH, patients of urologic surgeon Michael Zell, MD, are often surprised at how simple and efficient the procedure can be, with the patient frequently being discharged the same day, and recovery lasting only a few days more. 

Dr. Zell, along with his colleague Dr. Irina Jaeger, is one of the only surgeons in Ohio, and one of a very small percentage of surgeons in the country, who performs the HoLEP (holmium laser enucleation of the prostate) procedure, and one of even fewer surgeons who performs it with great frequency.

HoLEP requires no incision. Surgical entry is through the urethra, and whether the prostate is small or very large is irrelevant, and then the extremely precise holmium laser is used to cut through the prostate. Almost all of these procedures are done on an outpatient basis, and the patient returns for catheter removal within 24 to 48 hours, with a quick return to normal function.

Patients tell Dr. Zell how quickly their lives changed post-op. “It’s like night and day,” they’ll say. For months and years, they had suffered with complications that occur when the enlarged prostate interferes with bladder function.

“Seeing patients get better is the most rewarding part for all of us,” Dr. Zell says.
