This week, we worked with Samuel Ashfield Photography to capture images of the dedicated employees—the heart of the flour milling industry—at ADM , Carr's Flour Mills Limited , Company Bakery , and WM. NELSTROP & CO. LTD . These individuals, like those at all flour mills, represent the wide range of careers within flour milling, from flour millers to HR managers, engineers to lorry drivers, custodians to test bakers, and many more.

Yesterday, we hosted an event that brought together the London and South East Milling Society for a productive meeting, followed by a celebration of the UK’s top achievers in our Distance Learning Programme. The evening also featured insightful presentations from UK Flour Millers ’ President and Hovis Ltd’s Procurement Director, Gary Sharkey , who provided an update on the state of flour milling and CEO, Alistair Gale , who reflected on his first year leading our organisation. A highlight of the event was recognising the highest-achieving UK students from our 2023-2024 Distance Learning Programme, which continues to play an essential role in the growth of our industry and is spearheaded by our Training Manager, Steve Faerber . Steve Britton , Chair of our Training Committee and Procurement Director at Allied Mills, presented certificates to Kealan Hutchinson from G R Wright & Sons Ltd , William Mccormick-Hill from Allied Mills | part of Associated British Foods plc , Jasmine Morris from Satake Europe Limited , Kate Syers (also the highest achiever globally for her module) from WM. NELSTROP & CO. LTD , Lukáš Meliš from Doves Farm Foods Ltd , Edward Pratt from Hovis Ltd , and Mark Mitchell from ADM for their achievements across the seven Distance Learning Programme modules. This event not only celebrated the outstanding achievements of these UK-based individuals but also reinforced our commitment to training and development within the flour milling industry. We look forward to seeing how these talented professionals will contribute to the future of our sector.

Our Development Group, which supports member companies’ employees to access new and relevant briefings, came together for their first event since the pandemic, with a site visit to the Port of Tilbury London . The group’s programme included: learning about the port overall; a briefing on and tour of the Grain Terminal; vessel unloading operations; and concluded with an illuminating sustainability discuss with team members from Ford Motor Company . Member companies represented included ADM , Andrews Flour , G R Wright & Sons Ltd , Matthews Cotswold Flour , RIPON SELECT FOODS LIMITED , W&H Marriage & Sons Ltd , and Whitworth Bros Ltd . We worked with AHDB - Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board and British Nutrition Foundation this spring on their ingredients into school initiative, with many of our members donating #flour to classrooms across England. This exciting pilot received positive results and we are proud of the contributions made by our members. Flour mills are integral parts of communities across the UK and Ireland, and their role is strengthened through collaborations like these. By providing designated schools with high-quality flour, the #FlourMilling industry is fostering a connection between mills and the younger generation, educating them about the importance of this ingredient that nourishes the nation.

FAB Flour, or the Flour Advisory Bureau, has been a staple of our industry since 1956, providing reliable information about flour and flour-based foods along with tasty, “easy peasy” recipes. We are excited to share the website has been modernised with significant upgrades aimed to enhance the user experience for our industry partners and consumers alike.
