We thank all of our employees who have served or are currently serving in the U.S. military. Rich Ellis, president of Vanderbilt Tullahoma-Harton Hospital, served in the U.S. Coast Guard for more than 20 years. His oldest son, Tom, is an Army infantry officer on active duty. “We appreciate Vanderbilt Health’s support of the armed forces and our nation's veterans,” Ellis said. Our friends the Nashville Sounds Baseball Club helped us celebrate our workforce by opening up First Horizon Park for 24 hours to Vanderbilt University Medical Center employees and their families. The 5 p.m. Friday to 5 p.m. Saturday event enabled all employees, no matter when their shift ended, to join in on food, movies, batting practice, mini-golf, football and so much more! Thank you to all of our volunteers who helped make this celebration so special, and to all who joined us at the park!

Last week, Hannah, Michael and Kiersten made rounds at Vanderbilt Health and Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt to raise awareness around the causes of stroke and how to decrease stroke risk. Dressed as a blood clot, CT imaging, and Nurse Ratched with tenecteplase (clot-treating medicine) on hand, the trio brought donut holes (representing "clots"!) and coffee to the nurses on units that care for many stroke patients. Hannah is the stroke program coordinator, Kiersten is the stroke program manager and Michael is the stroke transitional care coordinator. Hannah said, “It’s a way for us to give back to the staff that care for our stroke patients, as well as for us to ask stroke-related questions to the staff about identification, prevention and risk factors. Anna Person, MD, professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases, is the recipient of the 2024 Clinical Teacher Award from the Infectious Diseases Society of America . Person created one of the first standardized patient curriculums for infectious diseases fellows, an enduring curriculum that has been published and widely shared. Congrats to the Vanderbilt Health Walk-In Clinic Pleasant View for being Pleasant View’s 2024 “Paint the Town Pink” winner! “Paint The Town Pink” is among multiple “Pink Out Pleasant View” events that take place each October. The goals of the community events are to help the community, fight for a cure, raise awareness and offer support for the area’s breast cancer patients. Crystal Brown has worked at the Pleasant View walk-in clinic as an X-ray technician for two years and has led the charge for “pinking out” the clinic. This year, everyone in the clinic voted on the theme, “Grease: Breast Is The Word.” All departments in the clinic pitched in to decorate. Their efforts paid off when the judges visited each participating location. Thank you, team, for your efforts to make a positive difference and congrats on your win!

Today’s employee spotlight shines on Lauren Talbott, a pharmacy reimbursement specialist. She has been a pharmacy technician for eight years, working at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt for nearly four years. In her words: “I will be transitioning to a pharmacy outpatient services technician coordinator this fall (2024). My day-to-day tasks consist of filling, labeling and packing prescriptions. I am also a part of the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit's meds-to-beds team. In this role we deliver discharge medications bedside, to make the transition easier for our surgery patients to get home and to ensure they get their medications. "I absolutely love working here at the children’s hospital. I work with some of the best people in this world. My coworkers are amazing and the staff here at the hospital make it easier to come to work each day. I also have some of the best patients and families that come here to the pharmacy. I have made some of the best relationships with families. Knowing that I come to work each day to make a difference in a child’s life by dispensing a life-saving medicine makes it all worthwhile. "My favorite memory from my time working here is when a patient came down to the pharmacy to tell me it was her last day of chemotherapy. I have known this patient for a long time, and it warmed my heart to know that she beat cancer. "Living with an autoimmune disease myself, I understand how important the pharmacy team is. I have multiple sclerosis and I require an infusion every six months. Pharmacists and technicians are there to ensure I am receiving the correct medication that keeps me alive and I am forever grateful for what we do in the pharmacy. "Outside of work, being a mom brings me joy. My son is the absolute best thing in this world. In his eyes I’m his superhero, but in my eyes he is mine. Being present in his life means so much to me. Trent Rosenbloom, MD, MPH, vice chair of Faculty Affairs in the Department of Biomedical Informatics, recently received the Byron Oberst Award from the Council on Clinical Information Technology during the 2024 American Academy of Pediatrics National Conference & Exhibition. He received the award in recognition of his two areas of policy work: reducing the burden of clinical documentation on health care professionals practicing pediatrics and improving how children and their families can engage as partners with their health data through patient portals.
