Pakistan’s internet landscape is widening but shrinking at the same time for people, businesses, and utilities. It is documented with evidence on year-to-year basis by Bytes for All (B4A), Pakistan - this initiative is something I find very important as a stepping stone to understand the future of ‘Digital Pakistan’. Proud to author Pakistan’s Internet Landscape Report, 2023. It has a very humbled and kind contribution from Ms. Rubina Khalid, the Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunications; renowned name in disinformation landscape and prominent journalist Shahzeb Jillani ; OSINT Analyst, a trailblazer in the Pakistani entrepreneurial ecosystem Invest2Innovate (i2i) ; Quetta Voice ’s Syed Ali Shah and Pakistan’s first of its kind, Agri-fintech Digitt Plus Bushra Wajahat assisted me on this project and made it possible for me. I along with 19 other wonderful Human Rights Defenders, Journalists, and Social Activists from Sindh participated in the 5-days Holistic Safety Workshop led by Bytes for All (B4A), Pakistan . We spent 5 days together to learn about digital and physical security and psychosocial well-being, an aspect that’s often neglected by people in activism. When work becomes a priority, personal wellbeing often takes the back seat. This workshop provided an opportunity to introspect and devise a strategy that ensures our health and security aren’t compromised in the long-run. The residential workshop successfully provided a safe space to the participants where we could share our concerns prompting a healthy discourse on how to operate and navigate safely online and offline when our activities are heavily censored/ surveilled. Introduction and hands-on training on digital security and CPR were the key features. As an activist operating in hostile environments, the onus of our security is on us and I’m excited to disseminate the learnings from this in my upcoming ride sessions to more women. Activism can be taxing, both mentally and emotionally, and long-term activism requires sustained efforts, a component that was well integrated into the comprehensive curriculum. Security in its all forms is foundational for activism and this training provided us with the knowledge on how to work safely, effectively and withstand the challenges of our work. Lastly, congratulations to Arsalan Ashraf for pulling off this whole thing meticulously and for being an amazing Trainer. #Advocacy #SocialActivism

Bytes for All is a human rights organization and a research think tank. It conducts research on the issues related to the impacts of information and communication technologies (ICTs) on the society and implements field projects in the light of this research.


Impact studies conducted by the organization include studying the usage patterns; penetration of different ICT tools or services; developing metrics or indicators to ICT-led developments on certain areas such as sustainable environment, health, and livelihoods; identifying best practices on different areas of ICT for development; analyzing or monitoring regulatory, policy, and internet rights issues; and recommending informed actions.


Bytes for All experiments with and organizes debates on the relevance of ICTs for sustainable development and strengthening human rights movements in the country. Its strategic plan delivers in following key result areas which include: securing digital rights and freedom of expression for civil liberties; strengthening digital security of human rights defenders and media professionals; ending technology-driven gender-based violence; network building at national, regional, and global levels; and community development and communications for environmental sustainability.


The organization’s field projects focus on strategic use of ICTs for women’s empowerment and combating violence against women; youth and peace building in the South Asia region; freedom of expression; privacy rights in Pakistan; digital security for human rights defenders; open governance; open net initiative; greening IT; internet and human rights; global information society watch; innovation for development; and internet governance.
