Japan and Pakistan have agreed to enhance cooperation in the field of information technology.

Ambassador of Japan to Pakistan Mitsuhiro WADA called on Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication Syed Amin Ul Haque here on Tuesday. Senior officers of the Ministry of IT were also present in the meeting.

During the meeting, the two sides agreed to enhance cooperation in the field of information technology between the two countries.

Talking to the Ambassador of Japan, Federal Minister for IT Syed Amin Ul Haque said Pakistan greatly values its relations with Japan. He said that it is vital to enhance cooperation between the two countries in the field of IT and telecommunication.

Carrefour, fully owned and operated by UAE-based Majid Al Futtaim in Pakistan, signed a Joint Venture Agreement with the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) Lahore on 26th April 2022 to establish two standalone stores.

The agreement was signed by Umer Lodhi, Country Manager, Carrefour Pakistan at Majid Al Futtaim Retail and Administrator DHA Lahore in the presence of Thierry Louis Joulin, Chief Operating Officer, Majid Al Futtaim Retail at DHA Head Office, Lahore.

The stores will not only expand the local footprint of the retail leader in the country, but also provide economic support to at least 500 households through the creation of direct and indirect jobs.

Minister for Finance, Miftah Ismail, has announced that the government will formulate a new policy to review petroleum prices. He stated that the government will only subsidize petrol for motorcycle users and not for the “elite class having big cars.”

Miftah told the media that the coalition government will improve the administration system in the coming months. He claimed that, as per the directives of Prime Minister (PM) Shahbaz Sharif, the new government will try to alleviate the economic pressure as soon as possible.

Miftah said that the current government will collect more taxes compared to the previous administration without charging any new tax. The preceding government had placed the people under immense stress, which the current government seeks to address on an urgent basis, he added.

The Pakistani Rupee (PKR) continued to recover against the US Dollar (USD) and reported gains in the interbank market today. The local currency gained 42 paisas against the greenback at the close of the session today.

It appreciated by 0.23 percent against the USD and closed at Rs. 185.62 today after gaining 70 paisas and closing at Rs. 186.05 in the interbank market on Saturday, 23 April. The domestic currency hit an intra-day low of Rs. 186.00 against the USD during today’s open market session.

The rupee reported gains against the dollar for the second consecutive day as global oil prices fell following China’s expansion of COVID testing in Beijing, which has heightened demand concerns. At the time of filing this report, Brent crude futures dipped $0.52, or 0.5 percent, to $101 a barrel, while the US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures lost $0.75, or 0.75 percent, to sit at 97.5 a barrel.

The government has decided to announce a four-day public holiday for Eid-ul-Fitr this year.

According to sources within the cabinet, the federal cabinet has finalized four holidays, from Monday, 2 May to Thursday, 5 May, for Eid.

A notification in this regard is likely to be issued on Wednesday.
