Insightful highlights from Slush 2023. 

💥 Back to Basics: The overarching theme emphasizes building capital-efficient businesses with robust unit economics. Success hinges on showcasing tangible solutions to real-world problems, a key takeaway for entrepreneurs navigating the funding landscape.

💥 After the post-COVID funding frenzy, 2023 sees a return to long-term funding trends. The AI sector is growing significantly, but concerns arise about sustainability, particularly in the genAI application layer. Caution is urged against AI companies riding the hype without building sustainable advantages, risking commoditization, especially for those relying on publicly available LLMs. Is a bubble incoming? 

💥 Erika Cheung, whistleblower from Theranos, shed light on common factors leading to failures in companies like Theranos, FTX, and Wirecard. Cultures without transparency, unchecked charismatic leaders, and a 'larger than life' mindset contribute to downfall. Establishing transparency and psychological safety is crucial.

💥 Despite challenges, the consensus is that challenging years ahead will birth great companies solving real problems. Founders need unwavering conviction, passion, and grit. As David Marcus of Lightspark advises, "Don't give up - succeed or die trying."

💥 Insights from Atomico's State of European Tech, presented by Tom Wehmeier, reveal a net inflow of tech talent to Europe from the US. However, the funding gap between the two continents persists, posing a central problem. We also note that European startups are still valued 30-60% lower than their US counterparts. Lower valuations combined with top talent made Europe an attractive region for VC investments in 2024. Despite the recent dip in funding from the record years, the amount of dry powder available in VC/PE funds is at an all-time high, waiting to be deployed in the coming years.

💥 Juha Vartiainen, founder of MQL Quantum, discusses the increasing adoption of quantum computing. Notably, until quantum computers have surpassed regular supercomputers in capacity, there is already a commercial case for them as they emit fewer CO2 emissions than regular supercomputers. When hitting full capacity, future applications include replicating nature at a molecular level, facilitating rapid drug development, etc. The ultimate frontier lies in combining AI and quantum computing for unprecedented information processing, even at a philosophical level.

In conclusion, the conference emphasizes the need for a strategic approach in navigating the evolving tech landscape. Visionary entrepreneurs play a central role in addressing current issues in challenging times. We appreciate the ongoing support from the ecosystem despite recent downturns; now more than ever, a robust VC ecosystem is essential.
