With AI and sensor technology from ProTecBird GmbH and software from the military sector, Rheinmetall and ProTecBird want to ensure the protection of red kites around wind turbines and at the same time contribute to the energy transition. Both companies have now announced the successful demonstration of the effectiveness of the AVES Wind anti-collision system for the protection of red kites around wind turbines, which was developed by ProTecBird by integrating Rheinmetall technology. With this milestone, the young technology start-up from Husum, which is specialised in the development and manufacturing of economical and species-specific anti-collision systems, has now overcome a significant hurdle for the energy revolution in Germany in partnership with Rheinmetall.

The development of effective anti-collision systems (ACS) has been one of the biggest challenges in the operation of wind farms in areas with wind-sensitive bird species. The balance between technical feasibility and reliable species protection is of central importance for the planning processes in the construction of wind farms. With its AI-based AVES Wind anti-collision system, ProTecBird has succeeded in solving this problem by defining and demonstrating the requirements for an anti-collision system in terms of nature conservation, economics and technology for the first time. By doing so, the system offers an alternative to generalised shutdown regulations by providing a customised solution for wind farm-operators through species- and situation-dependent short shutdowns.

As one of the federal states with the most wind power, Schleswig-Holstein is a pioneer in the establishment of forward-looking standards for anti-collision systems and their integration into approval procedures. On behalf of the Ministry of Energy Transition, Climate Protection, Environment and Nature of the Federal State of Schleswig-Holstein (MEKUN, Ger. for Ministerium für Energiewende, Klimaschutz, Umwelt und Natur), a committee was convened in September 2022 to develop a testing framework under the direction of the State Office for the Environment SH (LfU, Ger. for Landesamtes für Umwelt). This committee, consisting of a team of consultants (TÜV NORD, the Office for Biostatistics), ACS and wind energy manufacturers as well as stakeholders from nature conservation organisations and wind energy associations, developed a comprehensive testing framework for the validation of ACS by the end of 2023. On 8 August 2024, Tobias Goldschmidt, Minister of Energy Transition, Climate Protection, Environment and Nature of the Federal State of Schleswig-Holstein, announced the first nationwide testing framework for anti-collision systems.

“It is important to me to reach more women in production and those without a computer workplace. This is something we want to work on. After all, we want to benefit from ideas from every individual in the company.” What is Janina Lemme’s wish for the future? “That employees recognize the value added of our network for the company. Especially at the beginning, we were often asked what we even hoped to achieve. But everything that we do is meaningful and goal-oriented. For that, we also have the support of Peter Sebastian Krause on the Executive Board.”

To further strengthen Rheinmetall's position in the Nordic region, Rheinmetall Norway AS is transformed into Rheinmetall Nordic AS. The company's task is to coordinate Rheinmetall's business interests in all Nordic countries. Rheinmetall Nordic AS will continue under the same leadership as the former Rheinmetall Norway AS. 

As part of the reorganisation, the former Nordic Hub is also integrated into Rheinmetall Nordic AS.

Rheinmetall's Keiler Next Generation (NG), the highly protected armoured breaching system, demonstrated its capabilities in a live demonstration. Around 100 internationally invited guests from the armed forces, procurement authorities and industry took part in the event on 14 August 2024 at the Bergen military training area.

In a first section, the Keiler NG demonstrated the rapid creation of mine lanes in the field. The Pearson mine plough was used for this. The mine plough is over four metres wide and can clear mines at a speed of up to 250 metres per minute. The mine plough can be quickly replaced with a dozer blade. This means that the Keiler NG can also clear anti-tank obstacles, fill in trenches or create emplacements and prepared positions if required.

The highlight was the second section, in which the rocket-supported ‘Plofadder’ detonation cord system was used. Plofadder from Rheinmetall Denel Munition can cut a breach 160 metres long and nine metres wide in mine fields and obstacles in a matter of minutes. Fired in overlapping bursts, the Keiler NG's two Plofadder systems make it possible to overcome deep enemy mine barriers.

In addition to the mine plough and plofadder detonation cord system, the Keiler NG is also equipped with a magnetic signature duplicator that detonates second-generation mines well before the plough. Furthermore, its integrated lane marking system marks the created lanes for the following forces, even in limited visibility or at night.
The Keiler NG, which was presented to the public for the first time at the Eurosatory 2024 trade fair in Paris, also has an integrated crane, which it uses to establish clearing readiness and to load and unload the Plofadder ammunition boxes.

For self-protection, the Keiler carries the ROSY rapid obscurant system and the Remotely Controlled Weapon Station Natter 12.7. The crew of the Keiler NG consists of two soldiers. The possibility of remote-controlled deployment is already taken into account in the system’s concept, as is the fitting of an active protection system and interfacing on the digitalised battlefield.

The Keiler NG is based on the chassis of the Kodiak armoured engineer vehicle and thus belongs to the Leopard 2 family. On the one hand, this contributes to the high agility of this 63 ton platform: Top speed 65 km/h, climbing capability 90 centimetres, gradeability 60 percent, trench crossing capability more than 2.50 metres. On the other hand, being part of the Leoben family has a positive effect on interoperability, logistics and training. Existing Kodiak Army engineer tanks can be converted into a configuration similar to the Keiler NG using equipment kits, while existing Kodiak verification guides accelerate the operational readiness of the Keiler NG.

Acquisition expands and strengthens Rheinmetall's position in North America and the competition for high-volume major orders in the USA

With a strategic acquisition in the USA, Rheinmetall Group is expanding its position in the world's largest defense market and strengthening its core business in the field of land vehicles for military customers worldwide.

On 13 August 2024 Rheinmetall has signed an agreement to acquire all equity interests in Loc Performance Products, LLC, a renowned vehicle specialist based in Plymouth, Michigan.

The acquisition expands the Group's business with the US military, increases its industrial base in the USA and creates further access for its technologies in North America. Furthermore, Rheinmetall is strengthening its production capacities in the USA with a view to targeted high-volume major orders for U.S. Army vehicle programs with a total potential of over USD 60 billion. Rheinmetall is one of two remaining participants in the current prototype phase of the XM30 program. This program serves to introduce a new generation of infantry fighting vehicles. The volume is estimated at around USD 45 billion for around 4,000 infantry fighting vehicles. Furthermore, Rheinmetall is participating in the CTT (Common Tactical Truck) program, which has a volume of around USD 16 billion for around 40,000 trucks.
In addition, Rheinmetall expects the acquisition of Loc Performance to bring considerable benefits for both its American and for its global business. For example, an experienced workforce with a high level of technical expertise - including in the maintenance, repair and combat enhancement of military combat vehicles - will be integrated into Rheinmetall's internal supply chains.

Die Generalprobe vor dem Start in die Bundesliga-Saison 24/25 ist dem BVB am vergangenen Samstag mit einem Sieg gegen Aston Villa geglückt. 

Vor ausverkauftem Haus überzeugte Borussia Dortmund die Fans im SIGNAL IDUNA PARK. Einige Rheinmetall Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter feuerten ihren schwarzgelben Lieblingsverein bei sommerlicher Hitze an. Auch der gesamte Vorstand schnupperte Stadionluft und fieberte bei der spannenden Begegnung, die mit einem souveränen 2:0 endete, mit.

Dass Rheinmetall nun als Champion Partner an der Seite des BVB steht, zeigten neben der Bandenwerbung auch kurze Clips an der Stadion-Fassade vor dem Stadion.

Für die anstehende Bundesliga-Saison wünschen wir der Mannschaft viel Erfolg und viele weitere zu Null Spiele.
