Ampersand is Africa’s first electric transport energy company, providing a battery swap network and operating system to make sustainable mobility rapidly accessible and affordable for developing markets. The company focuses on catalyzing and powering mass-market electric mobility, particularly for commercial e-motorcycle fleets, with a goal of creating green jobs and lower-carbon public transport.

We build affordable electric vehicles and charging systems for the three million motorcycle taxi drivers in East Africa, starting with Rwanda. 

By using a battery swap model, we make it cheaper to buy and operate an electric motorcycle than a petrol motorbike. Going electric will already double a driver’s income now, and leapfrog Africa towards a zero carbon future.

We’re proud to announce that we’ve successfully raised USD$19.5 million in an equity funding round & debt facility with Acumen, Ecosystem Integrity Fund, Hard Edged Hope Fund and Cygnum Capital’s Africa Go Green Fund. 
These funds will ramp up electric motorcycle battery production, expand our swap station network and accelerate R&D on battery tech, software, and swap systems.

At this year's COP28, our CEO, Josh Whale, will be presenting on “From Assets to Flows: Unlocking Climate Finance for African Sustainable Economic Growth Projects”.

The session will be moderated by Climate Champions Sagarika Chatterjee and Jacinda Washington Njike, and aims to explore solutions with esteemed speakers such as Alexander Eaton, CEO of Sistema.bio / Sistema Biobolsa from Mexico, and Karim Ghammache, CEO of SolarX from Burkina Faso. Together, they'll discuss strategies and solutions to foster sustainable economic growth in Africa.

It was an honour hosting the US Ambassador at Ampersand Kenya this week! 
The visit was an excellent opportunity to exchange insights and further discussions on the transformation of electric motorcycles in Kenya and Rwanda. 

As our CEO Josh Whale engaged in vibrant discussions with Ambassador Meg Whitman, the visit further highlighted the significance of collaboration in driving positive change for sustainable transportation in Africa.

Exciting News! 

We're 'Heading The Charge’ in partnership with TotalEnergies to open 16 stations in Nairobi. Yesterday we were honoured to have TotalEnergies Africa Director Jean-Philippe launching our TotalEnergies Utalii in Westlands! 

This marks a deeper, more ambitious partnership with TotalEnergies and a journey to integrate Ampersand's operating model into the TotalEnergies' future for mobility energy in Africa, and unlocking growth for Ampersand at a scale and speed that wouldn't be possible alone. 

In the nearer term, it means transforming the e-motorcycle charging landscape in Nairobi by strategically placing Battery Swap stations within a 5-10km radius of all operational areas. This will redefine convenience and efficiency for over 2000 customers with the same reliability, customer experience and convenience of a fuel station, and safeguarding jobs for the thousands of fuel station staff across Kenya.

With Ambassador Whitman's deep professional experience previously leading US tech giants eBay and Hewlett Packard, we have high hopes for US-Kenya tech partnerships and Secretary of State Blinken's Award for Corporate Excellence for Ampersand just last month; we're excited about the future of US-Kenya collaboration for E-Mobility and tech.
