We’re not sure how many people can say they can add $20bn worth of value to a stock in a day, but Brian Niccol, current CEO of Chipotle, is now one of them. 

News broke this week that he’d be replacing the current Starbucks CEO Laxman Narasimhan, who will be stepping down immediately, while Niccol will join Starbucks on September 9th. 

Starbucks has had a tough time recently and this change in leadership could spur a new direction for the business, possibly with new menu offerings, a better digital experience and improved rewards programs.

Like many of the big tech stocks, Amazon has fallen sharply over the last month. It's down 20% from its highs, but also like them, it generates huge amounts of cash flows. 

This has been the case for a few years now, but wasn't always the perception. For many years Amazon was touted as the company that couldn’t generate a profit. 

Nowadays though, investors are recognising its profitability, and many expect this to continue to improve.  

If we look at operating cash flow, we can see just how profitable its underlying businesses are and how free cash flow represents this figure after it’s made its capital expenses. 

While today you'd be paying about 17x current operating cash flow for AMZN, you might be paying only 10x of its possible 2026 operating cash flow. That is, if analysts forecasts end up being correct! 

It's valuable to think about what future state the business could reach, because that will help put todays market price into context and help you decide if it's reasonable or not.

This week we are wrapping up our 5 part series on semis first with a look at the industries and end-markets that buy all those chips. Then, we’re looking at the underlying causes of industry earnings cycles to help us interpret where we might be in the current cycle.

Hot tip: P/E ratios will often rise dramatically early in a new cycle and appear to be high a long time before prices peak. P/E ratios can also fall, along with share prices, while earnings continue to rise towards their peak. The industry P/E movement can be a leading indicator of market up-cycles and down-cycles, albeit an imperfect one.

After reaching its all-time high of around $390 per share near the start of July, CrowdStrike has fallen 33% since then.

The global IT outage it caused has left it in crisis management mode, and shareholders are reassessing the situation. 

Some believe that it will be a short term challenge, while others are a bit more concerned that too much damage has been done.

Investors are digesting the information and either writing new narratives or updating their existing ones soon.
