Gisteren was het Nationaal Tuinbouw Congres. Na de aftrap van minister Wiersma mocht ik deelnemen aan de paneldiscussie en hielp ik bij een van de workshops. Een ding was wel duidelijk: de sector heeft moeite haar verhaal te vertellen. Een verhaal dat mij altijd heeft geïnspireerd om me in te zetten voor deze sector, is dat van Sir David Attenborough. Binnen 1 minuut weet hij perfect te verwoorden hoe Nederland wereldwijd vooroploopt in het produceren van voedsel met de hoogste efficiëntie. Dat is iets waar wij Nederlanders trots op mogen zijn! Hoe mooi zou het zijn als we deze efficiënte manier van voedselproductie kunnen delen met de rest van de wereld? Door de teelt eenvoudiger, efficienter en toegankelijker te maken. Dat is waarvoor wij Plense Technologies hebben opgericht.

🎉 Wrapping up an amazing summer internship at Plense Technologies within the YES!Delft community! 🎉 I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to learn, improve, and expand my understanding of agricultural technologies. This hands-on experience allowed me to dive into a real-world project focused on building predictive models, which was both challenging and rewarding. Throughout this journey, I've gained valuable skills in data science/analytics, sensor technology, and effective team communication. A big thank you to Plense Technologies for providing such an enriching environment, and I look forward to the possibility of future collaboration!

🌱 Research pilot with peppers 🌱 Bell peppers face the issue of going weak (‘slap gaan’ in Dutch), after which the plant is taken out if it doesn’t recover. If multiple plants are taken out, this results in large variations in your microclimate and your whole greenhouse needs to be cleared. Word on the street is that in e.g. the USA, this was the case for a brutal 35% of pepper greenhouses. To date, it is still unknown why some peppers go weak, whereas others don’t. A plant can sometimes feel like a 'black box' that behaves based on genetics, environment and management, but what is the influence of each? Last week we deployed another 20 ultrasound sensors on peppers from 2 varieties and with different irrigation strategies at the Delphy improvement centre. The goal is to monitor how the two varieties react to these different strategies, a step in 'opening the black box’.

🌱 Research pilot with chrysanthemums 🌱 Reducing energy consumption is needed for sustainable horticulture. However, to keep your plants healthy and your yield high, saving energy should be done without it affecting plant activity or 'going over the edge'. Monitoring transpiration and water uptake (or rather the lack of it) can help growers find this edge. Last week we deployed 20 ultrasound sensors on chrysanthemums with varying transpiration rates, driven by different PAR- and ventilation strategies. The goal of this research pilot is to validate the correlations between our ultrasound signal and the different transpiration rates.

We're apprentice growers! 🌱 When we started a bit more than a year ago, we became interns at Vreugdenhil Young Plants to learn more about our potential customers. This year, we are stepping up a notch, by growing our own tomatoes. What started as just a prototype test-facility grew into a real-life tomato cultivation course with some help of the staff of the TU Delft Hortus. And the tomatoes? They are delicious! 🍅

Deze maand hebben we te horen gekregen dat de MIT R&D Samenwerkingssubsidie is gehonoreerd aan deze samenwerking. Door zich bij de HortiHeroes Startups te voegen, bieden wij hen markttoegang tot de Food & Flower industrie én een enorm netwerk van o.a. zaadveredelaars, kwekers, handelsbedrijven, technische toeleveranciers en andere startups en scale-ups. 🚀 Voltiris wekt duurzame zonnestroom op in kassen, zonder lichtverlies voor het gewas. Dat doen ze door onderscheid te maken tussen verschillende lichtfrequenties. Het essentiële PAR-licht laten ze door naar het gewas, en van de rest maken ze duurzame energie. Zo gaan gewas- en stroomproductie hand in hand. 🚀De slimme sensoren van Plense Technologies kunnen met ultrasound luisteren naar wat er in planten gebeurt, net zoals een echo bij baby’s. Dit vertalen zij vervolgens naar informatie zoals sapstroom, stress en herstel van de plant, wat ze weer vertalen naar bepaalde adviezen of raseigenschappen. Want meten = weten!
