'Founder mode' is a mindset, one of extreme ownership and accountability. Founder mode isn't limited to founders only. I've seen non-founder staff exhibiting extreme ownership and accountability. They absorb problems across all levels and units of the org, and feel pain if they can't help fix them. You can find these people in large organizations too -- I think they used to be called 'intrapreneurs' although that label has been tainted over time by all the failed incubation efforts. I've also seen many founders act like 'salary men' that run their orgs and teams like a Fortune 500. The reason why Paul Graham's 'Founder mode' has been so polarizing is that we've gotten used to almost a decade of 'professional' and 'salary man' founders thanks to ZIRP and the startup-industrial-complex. True founders are intrinsically driven, not externally by status.

About a month ago, I officially completed my internship with HD under NUS Overseas Colleges ! My time with HD during NOC Thailand was incredibly rewarding, both in terms of developing new skills and gaining a strong entrepreneurial mindset. Working closely with the co-founders, I had the unique opportunity to witness how strategic decisions are made with a clear focus on scaling within Southeast Asia. Attending conferences and networking events across Bangkok, I connected with a diverse group of local and international entrepreneurs, which broadened my perspective on the global startup ecosystem. I also had the invaluable experience of exploring Thailand and Thai culture, something that opened my eyes to the warmth, complexity, and vibrant spirit of the Thai people. Overall, I’m extremely grateful to have been a part of NOC Thailand. It has truly inspired me to think outside the box and push my limits. The friendships and insights I’ve gained are invaluable, and I’m excited to bring these experiences back to Singapore as I continue my entrepreneurial journey. I would like to thank Sheji Ho , Sunny Lam , Pietro Borsano & Lee L. for making my time in Thailand a fruitful one. Till we meet again 🙏

For the past two months, I’ve had the privilege of interning at HDmall, where I contributed to a range of projects, including CRM, creative content, onsite assets, and cross-buying analysis. I played a key role in creating, editing, and managing content, particularly focusing on video production, while collaborating with various teams to ensure alignment with product goals, user needs, and marketing strategies. I also conducted cross-buying analysis, leveraging customer data to identify trends and provide insights for marketing and sales strategies. Additionally, I gained hands-on experience in maintaining and optimizing the platform, diving deep into the business to help make healthcare more accessible and affordable for Thai people. Thanks to the mentorship of SIR Sunny Lam , I was able to develop key entrepreneurial skills. Sunny’s guidance helped me think creatively, take ownership of projects, and approach challenges strategically. A special thanks to the product team intern and Sheji Ho for making this internship memorable and providing valuable support throughout my time at HDmall !!!

Thanks to the Association of Thai Students in the United States of America (ATSA) for having me on their panel this past weekend. It was great discussing innovation in Thailand with a panel incl. Governor Chadchart Sittipunt, Governor of Bangkok; Professor Dr. Sukit Limpijumnong, President of the National Science and Technology, Development Agency (NSTDA); Professor Dr. Nijasri Charnnarong Suwanwela, Associate Dean for Academic Services, Faculty of Medicine Chulalongkorn University; and Mr. Chanond Ruangkritya, Chief Executive Officer, Ananda Development PCL. Some thoughts I shared: 1. Chicken and egg issue -- The common and popular narrative of lack of startups in Thailand is to point at the dearth of support from the 'system' and the presence of 'boogeyman' large conglomerates that compete with upstarts. A more interesting, contrarian, and supply-driven view is that Thai talent -- and Asian talent in general -- tends to gravitate towards more conventional, high status (corporate) jobs due to our collectivist and conformist societies. It also doesn't help that Thailand, being one of the more developed markets in SEA, also has a higher percentage of these 'status' jobs available to absorb talent. Rather than waiting for the 'system' to get ready, aspiring entrepreneurs need to take a higher agency, intrinsically motivated approach and then 'demand' will come naturally. 2. Another misconception is the lack of funding in Thailand for startups. Every three months, I get VCs asking me for new founder leads in Thailand. And every time I have to disappoint them. In addition, the Board of Investment of Thailand also very recently announced its first matching fund ( https://lnkd.in/ggtwQ4xJ ). The demand is there and will only increase; we just need more talent to follow their own path against societal pressures. 3. Due to lack of competition resulting from 1 and 2 above, and the fact that Thailand has natural advantages in specific clusters such as EV, creative industries, and healthcare, Thailand is one of the best places to build companies. 4. On career development / choices -- life is like an RPG (role playing game). Unfortunately, most people pick the wrong character and level up the wrong stats. It's all about fit. Not everyone is suited for entrepreneurship, and not everyone is fit for a big company job. We just need to encourage the 1% that pick high status jobs but actually want to build their own companies to pursue their dreams.
