In the United States, nearly 1 in 3 adults (30.7%) are overweight; more than 2 in 5 adults (42.4%) have obesity. Despite the growing popularity of GLP-1 medications, employers are twice as likely to cover bariatric surgery than a GLP-1 for weight loss. Justifications for narrow coverage hinge on outrageous costs and a lack of evidence for the long-term effectiveness of anti-obesity drugs like Wegovy.

This month, Novo Nordisk, creator of Wegovy (semaglutide), challenged a long-standing narrative that for people without diabetes, #GLP1 medications are merely lifestyle products that offer cosmetic, not medical, benefits. Beyond #weightloss, their five-year clinical trial showed significant cardiovascular health benefits for patients who stay on Wegovy, citing a 20% reduction in risk of heart attack, strokes, and cardiovascular deaths.
