With Earth Day just around the corner, we’re reflecting on a world-famous design failure: plastic. ⁠

Since the 1970s, humans have made 8.3 billion metric tons of plastic. Most of it is waste. We plasticized the fossil record in a geological blink - and yet, Big Plastic and Big Oil are pumping out more and more of the problem.⁠
⁠
Plastic is so ubiquitous, it’s in our bodies: micro and nanoplastics have been detected in the human heart, lungs and bloodstream. A recent study found them in every human placenta tested, and new reports reveal the frightening impacts plastic chemicals have on health and fertility.⁠

We’ve all seen the headlines and the photos. Some of us have even read the reports. The plastic crisis is a massive, complex issue that affects everyone and disproportionately impacts the most vulnerable communities and ecosystems. It’s time to rethink the whole system. We need to demand a material revolution - and a strong legally-binding Global Plastics Treaty.⁠

The Photo Vogue Global Open Call is back! 

Returning this year for its third instalment, #Vogue is asking photographers to explore our relationship with the natural world and the myriad creatures that populate it. In collaboration with Parley for the Oceans and endorsed by all 27 editions of Vogue, the Open Call offers artists the chance to be featured at the 2024 #PhotoVogue Festival in Milan, with two artists receiving a $5,000 (£3,960) grant each.

International Women’s Day is both a celebration of the achievements of women and a call to work collectively towards a more inclusive, equal and just world. Women are disproportionately impacted by climate change and still underrepresented in global climate negotiations.

According to data collected by the Women’s Environment and Development Organization (WEDO), 34% of Party delegates at COP28 were women, and less than one in five Heads of Delegation (19%) was a woman. Despite the stats, women are leading on solutions. We see that every day.

Wakeup, meditate, swim, convene with pals, play, nap, hunt, repeat. 🔁 Not every day is a bad day to be a polar bear, as scientists at U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and Washington State University have been able to show in their latest research, which included strapping GoPros to polar bear collars to start answering a question: With the arctic region warming 2-4x more than other areas of the world, can polar bears adapt to a life with less sea ice?

Up until now, what polar bears eat, and how many calories they burn on land, has been a mystery. Earlier this month, the USGS released footage from GPS-enabled camera collars that were strapped to twenty polar bears to collect data on their feeding behavior across land in Wapusk National Park Canada.

The study showed that despite polar bears impressive adaptability, the predicted loss of sea ice poses a risk of serious starvation to specific polar bear populations. With the data obtained, researchers “can now estimate how forecasted sea ice loss may affect the survival and reproduction of specific populations… it helps us get a sense of how quickly changes may occur in different parts of their range, and support management and conservation decisions,” says Karyn Rhode (PhD), Research Wildlife Biologist with the USGS at the Alaska Science Center.
