“As a disabled artist, my health shapes my work, practice, and life. Art initially became my personal wellbeing tool—it was something grounding and healing for me.” As part of #DisabilityHistoryMonth , we caught up with Phoebe Kaniewska, a BA Sculpture student at Camberwell College of Arts . Phoebe is also a resident artist for several hospitals, where she regularly facilitates workshops for patients allowing them to use art as a therapeutic experience. 🌍 The Arts Taking Action: How the UK Cultural Sector is Driving Climate Change Solutions As world leaders gather for COP29's final day in Baku, Azerbaijan, to address the global climate crisis, a new report from Arts Council England highlights how the UK’s cultural sector is playing a critical role in this challenge. --- The report, based on data from 591 grantees, reveals that: 🔵 90% of cultural organisations now have environmental policies in place. 🔵 72% are taking tangible steps to improve energy efficiency. 🔵 Nearly three-quarters of organisations are embedding climate themes in their creative work to inspire awareness and change. --- This progress is more than just policy—it’s a creative revolution. From solar panels powering Creative Folkestone’s Quarterhouse to Global Grooves’ hydro turbine in Greater Manchester, the report shares 50 powerful examples of how the arts are leading by doing. Virtual Reality and art therapy come together with Wimbledon College of Arts graduate Charmiane's Showcase project to create a gamified experience of Brené Brown's book Atlas of the Heart, which looks at 87 emotions and experiences that define what it means to be human. Players are encouraged to practice lessons from the book by exploring the game's maps. Designed by NBBJ, this net-zero building incorporates nature-inspired architecture to create a calming, inclusive, and adaptive environment for children with learning differences such as dyslexia and dysgraphia. --- At the heart of the school is a serene courtyard, complete with a California sycamore tree and circular gardens. The U-shaped design ensures every space is within 50 feet of the outdoors, seamlessly integrating sensory learning, social engagement, and creative play. 🌳✨ --- Inside, muted colours, dimmable lighting, and natural materials help reduce overstimulation, creating classrooms that feel as warm and inviting as they are functional. Terraces on the upper-level double as outdoor classrooms, while staggered volumes minimise sound transfer, supporting students' well-being and focus. --- The school also champions sustainability, featuring energy-efficient systems, water-saving landscaping, and future-ready solar capabilities. Disabled people make up 23% of the population but they often feel alienated or isolated. The arts’ ability to offer us a window into another world makes it a perfect vehicle for awareness raising. When disabled people see their experiences reflected in art and design, it can be transformative.
