National Engineering Day was celebrated with the launch of the University’s new Engineering School BNU , and the latest lecture in BNU’s inaugural lecture series: Advancing Reliability in Electronic Packaging. 💡 Held at the recently renovated High Wycombe campus, the launch event brought together industry experts, academics, prospective students, and well-established professionals. Professor Sabuj Mallik (PhD, CEng, MIMechE, SFHEA) , Head of School of Engineering and the Built Environment at BNU, opened the event with a talk on the diversity of the profession and why its an important time to join the industry. 👏 Other speakers included Learie Attzs FCIPS Chartered, CEng FIMechE, MIoD , Associate Lecturer, Lara Newman , Chief Executive at LocatED, and Gordon Parker , Associate Lecturer at BNU, who all touched upon the importance of sustainability in engineering and shared insight on the significance of role models and importance of perseverance. 🌱 Professor Mallik’s inaugural lecture followed, where he discussed his research on the ‘Shift from Lead to Lead-Free Soldering’, including the history of electronic packaging and the advancement in its reliability over the last 60 years. Sabuj recounted the support of his family as a driving force for success in his early career, particularly his parents who he counted as ‘inspiring [him] to think big’ and their ‘advice playing a key role’ in his achievements to date, before moving on to his research on advancing reliability in electronic packaging. Meet Dr Annet Gamell , University Council member 🙌🏽 Below, Annet shares the story of her career which began leading a Sudanese camp caring for 42,000 refugees impacted by the devastating Ethiopian famine in the ‘80s. She went on to practice as a GP for 34 years and also worked across the NHS and other agencies to improve patient outcomes. Today at Buckinghamshire New University, we marked Remembrance Day with a two-minute silence and service hosted by our Volunteer Chaplain, Father Anthony Searle. On Remembrance Sunday, representatives from the University attended services in our campus communities. Imam Haseeb Jahangir, Inter-Faith Chaplain at BNU, reflected: “We prayed for all those who have suffered and continue to do so as a result of conflict around the world. As we honour the past, we must now put our faith in the future and come together in hope.” Lest we forget.

On Wednesday 13 November, BNU will be marking World Engineering Day with two exciting events, starting with the launch of Engineering School BNU 👏 The event will commence at 9:30am at the University’s High Wycombe campus and will feature an introduction from Head of School Professor Sabuj Mallik (PhD, CEng, MIMechE, SFHEA) , short presentations, a tour of the university, lunch, and refreshments, before concluding at 2:00pm. This week BNU held Public Health Awareness Week for our university and local communities where we celebrated and encouraged conversations about all things public health 🤩. We were delighted to host SAPHNA (School and Public Health Nurses Association) annual conference where we were heard from Sir Michael Marmot and Prof Jamie Waterall , Deputy Chief Public Health Nurse for England and had presentations awarded by Professor Karen Buckwell-Nutt , Director of the Institute for Health and Social Care. BNU’s Melanie Hayward - RN (Child) SCPHN (SN) CPNP RNT FHEA FRSA spoke about NASNA (NSHFE), the role of school nurses in safeguarding and child protection, as well as considering what makes the profession so valuable when it comes to prevention. Students, staff and the local community attended the Wellbeing Fair and learned how to administer CPR at our Restart at Heart sessions 🫀. Our three public health focused podcasts were also released, featuring BNU experts in discussion with incredible individuals who play a vital role in encouraging conversations around public health. In the second episode, Karen Buckwell-Nutt talks to Phoenix Lifestyle Innovations founder Lewis Baker about his battle with alcohol addiction and seeking help from The Oasis Partnership 📢. Our final podcast sees The Oasis Partnership CEO Colin McGregor-Paterson sit down with BNU’s Charmain Clayton to talk about ADHD, substance misuse and the link to criminal behaviour.
