The National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC) is the UK's national lab for quantum computing. NQCC works with businesses, government and the research community to deliver quantum computing capabilities for the UK.

The NQCC is a new research institution funded through UKRI, which is dedicated to accelerating the development of quantum computing by addressing the challenges of scalability. Working with partners across industry, government and the research community, the NQCC will create the necessary R&D capabilities through coordination and delivery of a technical programme, alongside the commissioning and operation of new facilities. The programme will deliver assured quantum computing capability, enabling the UK to remain internationally competitive. The centre will be headquartered in a purpose-built facility at the STFC’s Rutherford Appleton Laboratory Campus in Oxfordshire, which is due for completion in 2023.

Day 3 update: UK Quantum Hackathon 2024

The UK Quantum Hackathon 2024 has concluded with the teams presenting incredible solutions to their peers and an eminent panel of judges. The judges looked at the creativity of the solution, whether the team had investigated the scalability of their approach for more powerful quantum machines in the future, and the quality of their presentation.

The NQCC is pleased to welcome the Infleqtion UK's team to its premises, where they have installed a neutral atom quantum computer as part of our Quantum Computing Testbeds Initiative. 

Seven quantum companies, including Infleqtion, have been awarded multimillion-pound contracts to build a diverse range of quantum computing testbeds at the NQCC facilities in Oxfordshire by March 2025. The seven companies will develop and deliver machines representing a range of cutting-edge quantum computing technologies based on different platform architectures.

The 3rd UK Quantum Hackathon 2024 kicked off this morning at the University of Warwick in the presence of 140 people including over 70 coders, 38 mentors and service providers and the supporting team members. 

The UK Quantum Hackathon is the NQCC’s flagship annual event, delivered as part of our user engagement programme, SparQ. The event brings together teams of aspiring coders with industry mentors, to tackle practical challenges and develop solutions using quantum computing.

Aimed at students and early career researchers, participants will gain hands-on experience using quantum algorithms and coding with quantum computers.

This year’s event runs over 3 days, with the participants working in teams to develop solutions, showcase their results and demonstrate how they would tackle challenges in areas as diverse as healthcare, energy, and engineering.
