📣 Important announcement! 📣 We have published our first 3rd party verified Environment Product Declaration (EPD) for our 95-98.5% recycled floor tile product - Mas. We have always implicitly known that our recycled input materials and production process would be lower energy and have a lower impact on resources. But, by going through the EPD process we have been able to understand explicitly how our products measure up against our competitors. The process has been extremely complex, time consuming and expensive and we couldn’t have done it without support from Innovate UK . It took our team months to collect the data from our suppliers and production partners. Every part of the product life cycle was considered from the recycled raw materials, distances and types of transport used to the Kwh’s and cubic meters of natural gas used to manufacture. We also conducted experimental work to establish process emissions (emissions from the raw materials themselves during production). All of the data was then independently modelled by Rohit Panchal, Life cycle assessment specialist at the Materials Processing Institute to create our unique Life Cycle Analysis. Finally we had to work through the data with our 3rd party verifier Jan Weinzettel to make sure the data was accurately modelled and in line with PCR 2019:14 and ISO standard 14025. We are now able to compare our Mas range against other producers with published EPD’s. Published in the same month was a refresh of the Spanish Industry wide EPD from the Association of Ceramic Tile Manufacturers (ASCER) which represents 55% of Spanish producers. Their data puts the average GWP-Total (A1-A3) at 12.5 kg per m2. https://lnkd.in/eYuSyZka Our weighted average Mas tile emits GWP-Total: 6.09kg per m2 CO2 Eq meaning it creates approximately 51% less CO2 compared to the average Spanish tile. Comparisons are helpful to see where we are on our mission. However, the most important take away for us is the incredibly detailed data created will enable us to make better design decisions in the future and further reduce our carbon footprint and resource use.
