Earlier this afternoon we hosted the first of our two webinars to provide members with a greater understanding of what the recent Court of Appeal rulings on motor finance mean for them. Today's Budget was long foreshadowed as a tough one by the Chancellor. It certainly will have an impact with a raft of measures announced. Our Budget write up is the longest it's been in a while. More years of BiK certainty, VED hikes, Plug in Van Grant extended (huzzah), double cab u-turns reversed (is that a full circle?), more schemes brought into BiK and much more. There is a lot to digest. Sadly no timetable on opening full expensing to leasing and rental - although the commitment remains. What is clear based on my LinkedIn feed and conversations are the diverse reactions to this Budget. Some feel it meets transport decarbonisation needs, others are more pessimistic about the tax increases and point to missed opportunities. We are in a tough part of the transtion to zero emission transport and depending on your customers and business folks are in very different places. Last week’s ruling by the Court of Appeal has raised many questions and created uncertainty among those working in motor finance and associated sectors. We are aware of these concerns and have taken immediate steps to understand member views, alongside the legal and regulatory implications that the recent ruling could have. The BVRLA has appointed legal firm, Norton Rose Fulbright, to advise us on the details of the case and how it could impact our sector. Norton Rose Fulbright experts will be joining us on two webinars this week, giving leasing broker members the chance to hear the latest details directly and have questions addressed by the team. At our #ComplianceForum today at Shoosmiths we heard from Wayne Gibbard on the customer journey, recent regulatory acceleration and Friday’s commissions ruling. Luis Hernandez ’s presentation ‘Keeping your head out of the sand’ looked at FCA guidance and how firms can effectively use tools. Chris Fitch, PhD, FRSPH presented on the why, what and how of vulnerability, reflecting on the meaning of this label. A panel made up of Lethabo Motsoaledi , Jonathan Barrett , Dave Wright and Steve Tongue discussed how technology can support the customer journey.
