This World Diabetes Day, we've explored the realities of living with diabetes and for so many this means encountering myths and misunderstandings of what diabetes really is, negative attitudes and judgements. We are determined to end diabetes stigma, and a crucial first step in tackling it is education. Diabetes is a complex and serious condition. Type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes are driven by a complex mix of genetic and environmental factors, many of which we don’t yet fully understand, and over which a person may have little to no control. We’re so grateful to all of our partners that are supporting this year's World Diabetes Day campaign. Their support helps us fund our life-changing research into the complex causes of diabetes, advance new treatments and discoveries, and move us closer to a cure. This #WorldDiabetesDay , we are partnering with Diabetes UK to help raise awareness of diabetes, and to share the stories of people living with all types of diabetes. Paul was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes after experiencing unexplained weight loss. With the support of Diabetes UK’s website, Paul was able to understand more about the condition and ultimately put his diabetes into remission. “I honestly felt like I was in my 20’s again with more energy, sleeping well, and with more confidence”. Diabetes is a chronic condition that causes blood sugar levels to become too high. Type 2 diabetes (T2D) which is most common, is a condition where either, the body does not produce enough insulin, or the insulin the body makes does not work properly. 🧟♂️ Zombies aren’t just for Halloween… did you know our cells can turn into them too? For people with diabetes, foot ulcers can be extra slow to heal. And scientists think zombie-like cells may be to blame. These zombie cells don’t die when they should and release harmful chemicals that can damage our bodies and turn surrounding cells into zombies too. We’ve funded Dr Holly Wilkinson to research if anti-ageing drugs could kill zombie cells in foot ulcers to help them heal faster and reduce the risk of more serious foot problems. 🎃 Could this be the trick to treating foot ulcers?
