Team Love was at Slush in Helsinki last week. We loved connecting with founders, meeting with LPs and catching up with fellow GPs; in summary, the European ecosystem is thriving.

We particularly enjoyed:
- The AI Opportunity hosted by Google
- The Climate Summit hosted by Lightrock and Lightspeed
- Hearing Nico Rosberg talk about his transition from F1 driver to investor
- Sauna and ice dipping (yes it was brutally cold!)
- Plenty of VC dinners and side events including the LP reception, the Download and the Backed party to name a few; thanks to all the hosts
- Rounding off the week seeing Helsinki’s ice hockey team HIFK win a 4-3 thriller in overtime

⚡ Who: Founder and CEO Stella Smith had a number of small business interests alongside her senior financial services careers and discovered the lack of available affordable employee benefits solutions for her then team of contractors. What's more, she realised many others were in the same position.

The Financial Times Adviser recently highlighted that only 17% of advisers believe their clients are interested in startup investing, whereas 45% of investors surveyed would like to “explore early stage companies.”

The article also highlights the breakdown of tax efficient products advisers say they recommend to clients.

👉 90% advise on pensions and Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs)
👉 35% advise on Venture Capital Trusts (VCTs)
👉 27% advise on Enterprise Investment Schemes (EIS)

Considering the “perception gap” that the article highlights and products which advisers currently recommend, could there be more capital funnelled into VCTs and S/EIS in the coming years? Especially when investors are faced with “high inflation, frozen tax thresholds and reasonable returns on cash” as Jessica Franks from Octopus Investments states.

We’re delighted to share that we came away from the Growth Investor Awards last night as 'One to Watch' for Best EIS Investment Manager - Up and Coming Award! 🏆

As the youngest fund of the nominated finalists in this category we were happy to have been recognised in this way amongst a number of long-standing and incredible funds, especially in such a short time period having also won the Best EIS Investment Manager - New Entrant Award last year.

Huge news!

🙌 The Enterprise Investment Scheme and Venture Capital Trust reliefs will be extended to 2035.

👏 Well done to Christiana Stewart-Lockhart, all the Enterprise Investment Scheme Association (EISA) team, Philip Hare & Associates LLP and everyone else involved for their hard work ensuring a substantial increase in the clause by a decade!

🌱 The statement has been very welcomed by the UK early stage investment industry. Both founders and investors can plan their finances more effectively and in return help the UK economy grow and flourish.

The next stop would be to abolish the sunset clause altogether and, as Nick Hyett, CFA of Wealth Club highlights in Investment Week, the abolishment could have avoided a repeat of the uncertainty in a decade's time.

Others believe the government could make such schemes permanent as a "demonstrable example of greater flexibility that the UK now has outside of the EU regulatory orbit" (Jason Hollands, Bestinvest CEO).

🤼 The extension in tax relief has come at a time when the government continues to wrestle inflation down to 4.6% (Oct 23) from 6.7% (Sep 23), and from a high of 11.1% (Oct 22).

📉 The Office of Budget Responsibility predicts inflation to fall to 2.8% by the end of next year, and to hit the Bank of England’s target of 2% in 2025. Check out Sapphire Capital Partners LLP recent publication for more on the announcements. Link in the comments.
