As it’s Halloween, we’ve rummaged inside our creepy crypt of claim stories to bring you this terrifying tale of an architects’ project gone wrong. 👻🦇 Read on if you dare… Meet Sam, an architect of many years’ experience. She was chuffed when she landed a contract to design a ground-floor extension for a client we’ll call Mrs Smith. Sam’s designs were a hit and the delighted Mrs Smith asked if Sam knew someone who could do the building work. So, Sam recommended Bricked Up Ltd – a local company known for its speed and value. Two months later, despite countless phone calls and letters, Sam still hadn’t been paid. Until one cold, blustery day, when a letter from Mrs Smith’s solicitor plopped through the door…a letter that claimed she was suing Sam for negligent advice and for breaching her duty of care. (Blood-curdling scream.)☠️ Turns out Bricked Up had done a runner, leaving the extension half-built and condemned unsafe. And a furious Mrs Smith £50k out of pocket… It’s a scenario that’s the stuff of most architects’ nightmares. Though, fortunately, Sam could claim on her professional indemnity insurance. With her insurer’s help, the claim was settled for £80k – enough to cover the value of the project plus demolition costs. Why business insurance is like... lasagne. **In our best sumptuous food advert voice... Your insurance policy is made up of different, delicious layers, to cover the various risks your business faces. Imagine your business is the juicy, meaty filling and your insurance is the soft, cheesy pasta blanket keeping you warm and stopping the goodness from spilling out all over the place. We hold it all together, and of course, one doesn't work without the other. A well-thought-out insurance policy and your business go together to create the perfect signature dish.

A hazy mist of confusion often surrounds the question, “What does public liability insurance cover?” It’s easy to work out that it covers members of the public. But harder to imagine who or why. Or the scenarios in which you might have to claim on it. To dispel some of that mist, here’s PL in a nutshell: Public liability insurance protects businesses from third-party property damage or injury claims. From slips, trips, spills, clumsy fingers…in fact, any kind of workplace accident where you or one of your employees is accused of injuring someone or damaging their property. It covers everyone from clients, to contractors, to the postman. Essentially, anyone who interacts with your business in some way. As every business has unique risks, you alone decide whether you need it or not. But before you do, it’s worth thinking about the potential for causing someone serious injury at work. Your insurance can feel a lot like poor Moo Deng being assaulted by water. Endless quotes, policy wordings, jargon, and emails. Every part of it making you as irritated and confused as a baby pygmy hippo. It doesn’t have to feel like that, though. A good broker (wink wink) can cut off that annoying water supply and only give you the information you need. In a way that’s easy to understand. Summer has made way for autumn. It doesn’t all have to be doom and gloom in the face of darker nights and colder mornings, though. The #SchoolofRisk is here to shine a light on dodgy insurance jargon and warm your brain with knowledge. This time it’s… What is underinsurance and how can you avoid it? ⬇️ If you’ve ever bought professional insurance, you’ll probably have heard about underinsurance. Insurers love to warn you about it. But what is it? The simplest way to describe it is not having enough cover in the event of a claim. In practice, it can be a bit more complicated. Let’s look at a basic example. Your business is insured for £100,000. Something goes wrong and you need to make a claim. To settle it, the insurer says it’s going to cost £150,000. That £50,000 difference is underinsurance. Not only are you £50,000 worse off, the insurer can also reduce your payout by the percentage you’re underinsured. This is what’s called the ‘average rule’. In our example, you’re 33% underinsured, so you’d only receive £66,666. Double whammy. How can you avoid it? Simple. Prepare for the worst whenever you buy insurance. Value your contents accurately. And don’t cut corners for lower insurance costs in the short term. Any questions, share them in the comments below.
