Our chart spotlights the leading firms acting for defendants in claims issued in 2023. Powerhouse DAC Beachcroft leads by a considerable margin, while seasoned market leader Clyde & Co maintains a strong performance in second spot. 

Kennedys and RPC- law firm stand out as notable defendant side powerhouses, coming in at a close run third and fourth position respectively, underscoring their reliability and the trust clients place in them for their defendant work.

DWF maintained a robust position year-on-year, securing a joint position in the top 5 alongside Weightmans, a big mover in a positive year fueled by a range of disputes which saw them grow their activity by 33%.

The biggest increase came from HFW, accomplishing an astonishing 369% rise on the previous year, accredited to their defence of various clients but most notably insurers. 

Penningtons Manches Cooper LLP Manches Cooper also registered a substantial increase, also predominantly in insurance-related claims.

Shoosmiths doubled its activity, securing the tenth spot, while legal giant CMS UK once again features in the top 15, in eleventh spot, and banking heavyweights TLT LLP make their mark at 12th.

Specialist claimant firms feature in the top 15 list in 2023 but its litigation heavyweights who dominate. The chart spotlights the leading claimant firms acting on claims issued in 2023.

Barings Law secured the top spot for the first time, focusing on claimant-side insurance work, while usual contenders Leigh Day, Clyde & Co, Hamlins LLP and GSC Solicitors LLP maintained their high ranking positions in the top five. 

Leigh Day, in second, shifted its focus slightly from dieselgate claims to exerting more pressure on the public sector and healthcare, particularly in human rights cases.

Clyde & Co, just shy of second place, stand out for the breadth of their legal work and are prominent across the rankings.

Hill Dickinson LLP and DAC Beachcroft demonstrated a notable presence in construction sector disputes, resulting in strong years for both firms. 

Pinsent Masons have maintained their well-established position as a leading law firm finishing fractionally up on the previous year.

Stephenson Harwood LLP, saw a 33% increase in claimant-side activity, securing a spot in the top 10.

Shoosmiths, an impressive all rounder with a strong presence in both claimant and defendant rankings, holds the 10th position here after another strong year of commercial disputes work across a range of sectors from banking to manufacturing.

Addleshaw Goddard had a very active 2023 on the claimant-side, doubling their 2022 claimant figures.

DWF’s claimant activity was mainly in the TCC and Property courts representing construction, banking and consumer product organisations.

In a year marked by significant geopolitical events, particularly the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war, it is unsurprising that the seizure of aircraft produced some of the highest value disputes of 2023. 

Litigators in insurance and aviation experienced a surge in activity, with the aviation sector standing out for having the highest average claim values. Additionally, new Covid-related disputes, including the complexities of insurance policies, have further contributed to increased activity in the insurance sector.
 
The construction & infrastructure, banking & finance, and professional services sectors have also been incredibly busy. The commodities & mining sector saw low claim volumes, though tending to be higher in value, largely due to a series of securities claims associated with Glencore. Pharmaceutical shares a similar pattern.

Clyde & Co and 4 New Square Chambers were the most active law firm and chambers in the High Court in 2023, a year that saw commercial dispute numbers stay steady and insolvency matters on the rise.

Solomonic’s law firm ranking for 2023 shows the top 30 firms maintained rock solid control over the substantial litigation work. The table reveals the leading firms acting in claims issued in 2023.

🏆 Clyde & Co maintained their market leading position for a third year in a row.

DAC Beachcroft secured second spot, with a 16% uplift in claim volume.

Barings Law emerges as the biggest new entrant, its rise driven by a raft of pandemic business interruption claims.

Legal giants DWF and Kennedys complete the top 5.

Disputes powerhouse RPC- law firm comes in at 6th and Weightmans, Shoosmiths and Leigh Day complete the top 10.

Other litigation leaders all retain a top 30 spot, including Eversheds Sutherland, TLT LLP, CMS UK, Hill Dickinson LLP, Stephenson Harwood LLP and FT 2023 Innovative Law Firm award winners Pinsent Masons.

Key performers include respected heavyweight HFW who return to the table with a big jump in new High Court work (up 125%). Addleshaw Goddard (66%) and Mishcon de Reya LLP (48%) also delivered increased High Court activity.

Feeling the Monday blues on this #BlueMonday? Well, when it comes to the number of claims in the High Court, today is just a typical day in January. Since 2020, the third Monday of the month differed by an average of 1.5% in volume of claims for January.

In fact, if we compare the third Monday of January to an average day in its respective year that drops to 15% fewer disputes registered, which some might even say reflects a happy metric! January tends to be a quieter month overall, so take a moment to enjoy a brew and Tuesday will be here before you know it.
