7️⃣ 4️⃣ per cent... That's the amount of food waste not being recycled in the EU. 🌍 According to a recent report from the Bio-based Industries Consortium looking back at figures from 2022, just 26% was captured, while the rest ended up in landfill or was incinerated. 🔥 The target is to reach 65% by 2035 - equivalent to capturing an additional 40 million tonnes of material every year. The analysis includes data from the UK, showing that at the time there was a theoretical potential for our nations to capture a further 5.2m tonnes of food waste. 👀 Arguably, that will have changed by some margin in recent times but no doubt there's more to do in order to capture the majority of available food waste. We're very proud of our Bishop's Cleeve AD facility in Gloucestershire! 😎 The site, just outside Bishop's Cleeve itself and not far from Cheltenham, recycles a mix of municipal and commercial food waste from Gloucestershire and the wider region. 🥑 🥔 🥕 Through anaerobic digestion the site recycles up to 34,000 tonnes of food waste a year into biomethane, injecting it directly into the grid to provide energy for homes. ⚡ The remaining by-product is pasteurised and used as an organic liquid fertiliser on local farmland. 🚜 👨🌾 Through this site we also have close ties with CHELTENHAM NORTH RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED , who play their home matches just down the road! 🏉 #GreenPower #Gloucestershire #sustainability #recycling #foodwaste #anaerobicdigestion #netzero #circulareconomy #renewableenergy

What an interesting week to work in the waste sector. 💡 Not only has it been #RecycleWeek by WRAP , but we also had #WorldFoodDay on Wednesday, both events encouraging us to rethink our use of resources, and strive for better both in terms of reducing our consumption, but also using, reusing and recycling more efficiently throughout all our daily lives. ♻ As much as 30% of the contents of residual (general refuse) bins has been reported to be food waste in some local authority areas, so it's the perfect week to combine our thinking around how we can not only waste less food, but be more aware of the recycling benefits it can bring when we do throw it away. 🥕 🥔 🥒 🦐 We create enough energy from food waste every year to power more than 100,000 homes.
