The UK Innovation & Science Seed Fund (formerly known as The Rainbow Seed Fund) is an early-stage venture capital fund dedicated to kick-starting promising technology companies developed at some of the UK’s largest publicly-funded research facilities.

Today UK Research and Innovation have announced additional investment into the UK Innovation & Science Seed Fund from UKRI and the UK Ministry of Defence, bringing total funding over £100 million for the first time.

Since we launched in 2002, we have been providing crucial support to emerging innovators, with a remarkable impact on the UK economy. From investments totalling £30 million, we've attracted a return of £25 of private investment for every £1 of public money. Companies supported have created over 1,100 high-quality jobs across the UK and an impressive range of real-world impacts.

Tokamak Energy - working on transforming the delivery of fusion energy to the National Grid by the 2030s.
 
SOLASTA Bio - creating world-first green insecticides using tech developed at the University of Glasgow
 
iFAST Diagnostics - using rapid diagnostic tech to identify antibiotic resistance ten times faster than the current gold standard
 
Crescendo Biologics Limited - a spinout from The The Babraham Institute trialling novel therapeutics that use the immune system to treat and manage cancer
 
Luffy AI - delivering the next generation in adaptive intelligence for robotics and industrial control

Science Minister George Freeman MP comments on the investment: "Innovation is about the seed of an idea being brought to life and I am proud that public investment is continuing to kickstart vital scientific discoveries, including new cancer treatments and technology to identify antimicrobial resistance, that can transform our society’s health and prosperity.

"This funding, reaching over £100 million with today’s investment, has so far supported more than a thousand high-quality jobs across the UK and secured more than £700 million of further private investment, in turn levelling up our country and boosting our economy."
