We will invest more than £500m in the next four years, in projects which create social value and support our inclusive economy agenda, across transport, housing, skills and adult education, the social economy, business growth, innovation, land and property.

👉 Did you know? 1,700 men working in intense, dark and damp conditions excavated 1,200,000 tons of rock, and replaced it with 82,000 tonnes of cast iron, and 270,000 tonnes of concrete to build the impressive construction entirely by hand.

🎂 | 🗣 As part of our 90th Anniversary celebrations for the Queensway Tunnel this week, we were delighted to host a special event with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT) at Mann Island last night.

Attendees were told the story of how the idea of the tunnel was initially conceived and the social and economic impact this engineering marvel has had on the city and country. 

There was plenty of fascinating discussion about how the engineers approached the problem of subaqueous excavation and construction (including methods that have stood the test of time), as well as some information on future developments of the tunnel.

A huge thank you to the speakers - our own Colin Dever and Alison Smith, and Guna Rajadurai from Mott MacDonald for a fascinating talk to celebrate an impressive landmark birthday!

Women played a vital role in the build of the Queensway Tunnel, making around 600 miles worth of electrical cable by hand that would be used for lights and essential communication services. Each cable was bonded and welded by hand, with some still in use today, 90 years later. 🔌 🚗

#LCRInnovation | This week we welcomed a top level Romanian delegation as we explore opportunities to share best practice, collaborate on maritime and transport innovation and increase trade links between the #LiverpoolCityRegion and the Black Sea Port of #Constanta.

Liverpool City Region Deputy Mayor and Leader of Halton Borough Council, Cllr Mike Wharton, and Dr Aileen Jones - Executive Director Investment and Delivery were delighted to welcome Romanian Secretary of State, Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, Mr Bogdan Mindrescu, along with the Romanian Ambassador to the UK, Her Excellency Laura Popescu, Consul General of Romania in Manchester, Mrs Nicoleta Teodorovici and Mr Adrian Daniel Gavruta, President of Board Administration of The National Company "Maritime Ports Administration" S.A. Constanta.

Peel Ports Group kindly hosted a tour of the Port of Liverpool and the delegates participated in a networking event with businesses and partners across the city region.

👉 Did you know, until the 1980s, the Queensway Tunnel was cleaned entirely by hand, with women making up the bulk of the workforce, they would use mop and bucket to wash walls, sweep the roads by hand and pick up litter.

Mayor Steve Rotheram has welcomed the move to accelerate the regeneration saying it "has the potential to be a catalyst for growth and wider regeneration for great swathes of South Sefton and North Liverpool, creating jobs and attracting investment."

🚉 Earlier today, Mayor Steve Rotheram came along to Baltic Creative CIC to try out the virtual reality walkthrough of the Liverpool Baltic station plans.
