In order to meet our #NetZero targets, we must get clean secure and homegrown electricity into the grid. The current reliance on fossil fuels is driving high bills. To do this, we must make sure that ready projects can be connected to the grid as quickly as possible. Currently, there are a number of issues which prevent this so looking at two key sets of reforms that are required. The ongoing NESO-led connections reform is looking to introduce a new connections process – only those projects that are ready to connect and are needed by the GB system will secure connections. We expect to take decisions to implement the new process in early 2025. As part of connections regulatory reform, the Ofgem-led end to end review is looking at changes to regulations to drive the right behaviours and outcomes required in this new process world. I was delighted to speak at the recent UK National Audit Office webinar on ‘The roles of regulators in a changing world’. I touched on several points about how the Delivery and Schemes Directorate within Ofgem responds to new and existing challenges. But as a quick summary: * Never underestimate the importance of getting out there and talking to stakeholders, customers and scheme participants. This is vital in both scheme design and implementation. * Create an operating model where we have capacity to adapt. In this sector there will always be new demands and its important to have the ability to respond to something we don’t know is coming in the next week or next month. * It’s not just about implementing the technical regulation that matters, but how you do that in an agile, digital way that also allow changes and refinements to be addressed rapidly. Thanks also to my co-panellists Colin Macleod and Sheryl Willson for their insightful presentations on space regulation and online safety, respectively.

On Wednesday our Chair, Mark McAllister, visited Sero a net-zero housing & technology company in Cardiff. Mark joined with Sero’s Co-CEO, James Williams & their Head of Energy Services, Ciara Murphy for a tour of Sero’s net-zero development at Addison House. Addison House is a Cardiff Council social housing block in which Sero’s technology has offered tenants the ability to cut their bills through the use of ground-source heating, solar panels, and smart technology. Mark was greatly impressed by Sero’s innovative work to bring consumers along on the net-zero journey, and to demonstrate the real value of renewables for vulnerable & low-income consumers. Ofgem Director of Consumer Protection and Retail Markets Charlotte Friel and Director General, Markets Tim Jarvis , were in Orkney yesterday to meet residents, community groups and businesses to learn more about the unique challenges faced by energy consumers in rural and island locations. With Scotland’s most northerly isles being the most impacted area per capita in the UK, the RTS electricity meter upgrade campaign was a key topic of conversation.
