Yesterday, we launched the West of England’s Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS) – a landmark initiative that sets the region on a path to restore, reconnect, and recover nature across landscapes of all scales. Led by Mayor Dan Norris, the West of England is the first region in the country to launch its LNRS, taking bold steps toward a thriving natural environment that supports a healthy, resilient society and economy. Our vision is for fully connected landscapes and a network of natural habitats and wildlife corridors that work for nature, climate, and people—from our wildest places to our towns and city centres. The LNRS and toolkit are designed to reverse the persistent declines in biodiversity, restore ecosystems, and reconnect people with the natural world. Aligned with the strategy are the West of England Nature Partnership ’s nine priority programmes, each working at a truly landscape scale to help nature recover, restore biodiversity, and build resilience to climate change. It was a great day celebrating the Mayor’s #BeeBoldAwards hosted by Redcatch Community Garden . The awards celebrate the fantastic work being done to make the West of England the UK’s bee and pollinator capital! The West of England Mayor, Dan Norris, awarded six inspiring organisations who are transforming their local areas and encouraging their employees, supporters, and local residents to take action for bees and other #pollinators . This year’s awards were hosted by Redcatch Community Garden who have created several pollinator habitats in Redcatch Park and in their own Garden. The Knowle-based project was supported by the Mayor’s £1 million pollinator fund, which has enabled over 262 hectares of land to be improved for bees and other species through the efforts of over 5,000 local volunteers. From rewilding projects to wildflower meadows initiatives like these are crucial to ensuring that local #nature is restored, reconnected, and recovering. Portway Park & Ride station in Bristol has scooped a prestigious ICE South West Civil Engineering Award. Portway, which picked up the Collaboration Award, was the first railway station to open in Bristol in almost a century in August 2023. It was delivered as part of Mayor Dan Norris’s commitment to build new stations across the West of England. Portway was followed by Ashley Down station which opened last month, and it became the second new station to open in Bristol in just over a year. Announcing the first of four new community-owned rooftop solar installations in partnership with Brunelcare ... We've installed 266 solar panels at Deerhurst Care home who provide the highest level of nursing and dementia care for its 76 residents. ☀️😊 The energy produced will help power the nurse call system in every room, the building's lift system, as well as electronics and entertainment for the residents in an environmentally friendly way 🌍 It's estimated the installation will save the care home £9,200 per year in energy bills and save an estimated 17.4 tonnes of carbon release per year.
