Last week our Chief Nurse Karen Bonner received her MBE from The Princess Royal at Windsor Castle. Karen said: “I was delighted to attend Windsor Castle last Tuesday to receive my MBE from HRH Princess Anne. This was a proud moment for my 80-year-old mother who attended with me. World Radiography Day (WRD) is celebrated on 8 November each year. The date marks the anniversary of the discovery of x-radiation by Wilhelm Roentgen in 1895. Radiographers worldwide use this day to promote radiography as a career, as a vital contribution to modern healthcare, and as an opportunity to increase public awareness of diagnostic imaging and radiation therapy. Radiographers are registered Allied Health Professionals (AHPs). There are two branches of radiography: Diagnostic and Therapeutic. Radiographers are clinical practitioners, managers, leaders, researchers and educators. They work as a team together with support workers, assistant practitioners and radiologists to provide person-centred support and care for patients during screening, diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of trauma and disease processes. The profession is dynamic, developing rapidly in response to changing technological, health and patient population needs. Every year, radiographers provide essential healthcare services (24 hours a day, 7 days a week) to millions of people. Radiographers in the UK work under regulation of the The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Radiology consists of x-ray (breast imaging, CT, fluoroscopy/interventional), nuclear medicine, MRI and ultrasound. Many radiographers have the opportunity to extend their role and perform procedures that weren't historically performed by radiologists such as nerve root and hip injections, PICC line insertions, U/S prostate and breast biopsies. Every year in October we celebrate Speak Up Month – a month to raise awareness of Freedom to Speak Up and make speaking up business as usual for everyone. The theme this year is Listen Up and focuses on the power of listening, and the important part it plays in encouraging people to feel confident to speak up. This half-term our Health on the High Street service at Unit 33 in Friar's Square Shopping Centre in Aylesbury celebrated more than a year of offering the local community easy access to support and advice for their health and wellbeing, including one year health checks for babies, parent and toddler groups, health checks, blood pressure checks, smoking cessation advice and much more. Unit 33 opened on the 26 September 2023 and since opening 14,000 people have accessed the unit and hundreds of people have had their blood pressure checked or a mini health check. Happy Birthday, Unit 33, and thank you to the local community who use the facility and take control of their own health and wellbeing. Start well, live well, stay well!
