‘This is my super pump!’ Four-year-old Ava-Rose shows us her very own superpower — a continuous glucose monitor. The ‘artificial pancreas’, or hybrid closed loop technology helps her manage her type 1 diabetes by continually monitors the blood glucose levels, and then automatically adjusts the amount of insulin they are given. The artificial pancreas will help thousands more people with type 1 diabetes thanks to a cost-effective deal secured by the NHS in England. A new ‘ping and book’ service is set to improve access to cancer screenings for women. Launching next month, this digital service will alert women when they’re due for a breast or cervical screening, offering convenient booking options through the NHS App starting next year. With added support for NHS staff, the initiative encourages eligible employees to attend screenings during work hours. Last year, NHS breast screening detected early-stage cancers in nearly 19,000 women, yet over 35% of eligible women missed screenings. The new ‘ping and book’ service, combined with on-site screening in some workplaces, aims to make screenings more accessible and prevent life-threatening delays. NHS is introducing a new stop-smoking pill to help thousands of people in England quit smoking, in a move that could save thousands of lives. This daily pill, called varenicline, reduces nicotine cravings and blocks its effects on the brain, helping people manage withdrawal symptoms. Used alongside counselling, varenicline has helped one in four people quit for six months or more. The rollout is expected to support over 85,000 quit attempts each year, potentially preventing up to 9,500 smoking-related deaths over the next five years. Varenicline is being offered in conjunction with pharmacy and council-led stop smoking services across the country, with smokers wanting to quit able to self-refer to these services by visiting the NHS Better Health website. https://lnkd.in/eCrUfcyP

Join us for a behind-the-scenes look at a pulmonary endarterectomy, a complex surgery to remove hardened clots and scar tissue from blood vessels in the lungs. The operation, performed at Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust , involves draining all the blood out of a patient’s body, so the surgical team can see deep enough into the lungs to clear the clots. The team then works against the clock to clear clot and scar material from blood vessels in one lung. They have just 20 minutes before the blood flow must be restored, going from the reservoir in the heart-lung bypass machine back into the patient’s body. Every day multi-disciplinary healthcare teams perform complex, life-saving procedures to help patients facing serious health conditions. Feeling inspired? More than 5,000 people in England have been diagnosed with lung cancer earlier thanks to the NHS Targeted Lung Health Check programme, which uses mobile scanning trucks to visit local communities. Using a mix of hospital services and scanning trucks that visit community sites, such as supermarket carparks and town centres, in-depth lung health checks can be carried out on current and past smokers. This has helped people like David who received an earlier cancer diagnosis after receiving an invitation for a lung health check. ‘My first scan was in a supermarket car park, and the appointment was very well organised. It was followed by a call and another scan because they found a suspicious nodule. I was shocked to learn I had cancer in the first place and thought dealing with it was quite an inconvenience given how fit I was.’ As a former mechanic, I like to think of health checks like preventative servicing for your car. A lover of drumming and mixing, Mervyn’s hands and arms had become very weak following his heart transplant operation. But everything changed when Occupational Therapist Amil brought a finger-operated drum to his bedside. With Amil leading on the vocals and guitar, Mervyn joined in with some drumbeats and backing vocals! This is a great example of the difference that occupational therapists can make to the physical, mental and emotional recovery of a patient, enabling them to remain positive and motivated.
