Further strides forward for our blood cancer community! Two new treatments for use on the NHS in Scotland have just been approved 🎉 🙌 The approval includes Yescarta, a CAR-T therapy for adults diagnosed with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and high-grade B-cell lymphoma (HGBL). Roughly 450 people are diagnosed in Scotland each year, and this will give opportunity to be treated with CAR-T therapy sooner. Vanflyta has been approved for the treatment of newly diagnosed (FLT3-ITD-positive) acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) on the NHS in Scotland. The drug is to be used in combination with standard cytarabine & anthracycline induction, & standard cytarabine consolidation chemo. In Scotland, around 150 people were diagnosed with AML per year, and FLT3-ITD mutations are detected in approximately 25% of cases. Despite this, until now, there were no treatments in Scotland which targeted the ITD mutation. These treatments are already available across the rest of the UK. Whilst we're pleased this provides new hope, we recognise these drug cannot be used for everyone with the condition, and must ensure that no stone is left unturned in the hunt for new treatments. Exciting news – yesterday Minister Stephen Kinnock outlined the UK government's commitment to a National Cancer Plan. Blood cancer is the 5th most common cancer but as Clive Jones MP said during the debate, historically there's been a lack of strategic direction in blood cancer policy. Now is the time to address this and to create a brighter future for people with blood cancer, as outlined in our UK Blood Cancer Action Plan. Thank you to Clive Jones for raising this debate, and Max Wilkinson MP for sharing your experience of being affected by blood cancer.

To improve the lives of those with a type of blood cancer called follicular lymphoma, we’ve teamed up with the Follicular Lymphoma Foundation to support a world-class trial taking place at The Christie in Manchester 💊 This project which forms a sub-set of an ongoing clinical trial will give us a better understanding of how the drug, rituximab, could improve outcomes for people with the disease. Many people with this type of blood cancer can be treated but currently follicular lymphoma cannot be cured and will eventually come back. 👩🔬 In this trial, Dr Kim Linton and her team are identifying people who’ve not previously received treatment for their disease from around 65 NHS locations across the UK. They plan to closely monitor them for five years, looking at what order treatments are given to people, and to who, and how they respond. 🤝 Funding this trial in partnership with the Follicular Lymphoma Foundation is crucial for understanding and improving the delivery of treatments to people with follicular lymphoma. It will help us avoid giving people unnecessary toxic therapies, something that people with this blood cancer desperately need. Thank you to our community for helping us fund this research. Some types of blood cancer can be more common in certain ethnic groups. However not many people from ethnic minorities access blood cancer clinical trials. We want to change this and need your help. Are you from a Black or Pakistani background and have been affected by blood cancer? We need your help to make trials and research more accessible for your community. You'll be invited to participate in an interview or workshop to share your insights and experiences of blood cancer. It will take about 1-2 hours and you will be paid for your time. We are looking for people who: 🔴 Are from a Black or Pakistani background 🔴 Have a lived experience of blood cancer 🔴 You will be based in or work in London.
