Meet Elizabeth Maxwell, baker extraordinaire, mountain climber and Fight for Sight fundraiser. As a child Elizabeth had Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis, which eventually led to Uveitis and cataracts later in life. As an adult Elizabeth believes that research is hope for those living with vision loss which is why she bakes and makes chutneys sold at Christmas fares every year. The team rolled up their sleeves and got fully immersed, helping us sort, list, photograph, and price donated stock to go live on our marketplaces. Their hard work and dedication are helping to turn these items into critical funding for ground-breaking research and social impact projects, directly impacting the lives of people living with sight loss across the UK. Choroideremia is a rare, inherited eye condition that primarily affects males and impacts approximately 1 in 50,000 people. Due to a loss of cells in and around the the retina, the eye's light-sensitive layer, choroideremia leads to vision loss over time. The Salisbury family created the Tommy Salisbury Fund to support research into treatments for choroideremia, inspired by their son Tommy's diagnosis. So far, the fund has raised over £714,000. Acanthamoeba Keratitis (AK) is a rare but serious eye infection of the cornea (the clear surface of the eye) and is associated with poor contact lens care. AK can lead to permanent sight loss if not treated early and 90% of cases could be avoided with proper care. Fight for Sight is a contributing member of the Acanthamoeba Keratitis Eye Foundation and last week the alliance released a white paper with recommendations to raise awareness of the condition outlining prevention, treatment and patient care. Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) is a serious eye infection, most common among contact lens wearers, that can cause severe pain and potential vision loss. While AK is treatable, it is often misdiagnosed due to its similarities with other eye infections and can drastically affect quality of life. The Global Alliance Against Acanthamoeba Keratitis, led by UNSW Associate Professor Nicole Carnt , has now launched a White Paper outlining key steps for raising awareness and improving AK treatment. Designed for healthcare clinicians and regulators, the paper highlights patient experiences and provides recommendations on AK diagnosis and contact lens safety.
