Thank you Heston Blumenthal for opening up about your experiences with bipolar disorder, mania, and being sectioned under the Mental Health Act. It takes a lot of courage to speak so openly about these experiences, but your bravery is inspiring to so many of us going through the same things. Before moving to another facility, Heston mentioned spending 2 weeks in a mental health hospital that he describes as “basically like a prison. It was quite miserable.” We hear you. Sadly, many people who’ve been held for mental health crisis care may find this description all too familiar. Mental health hospitals should feel safe. They should be places of understanding, kindness, and hope — places where people feel respected and cared for. But too often, that’s not the reality. We wont stop fighting for better. It’s time to Raise the Standard of mental health hospitals. The UK government needs to act now. This means being bolder in its reforms to the Mental Health Act, and providing the funding needed to give mental health hospitals the transformation they desperately need.

1 in 4 of us experience a mental health problem. Over 2 million people are on the waiting list for NHS mental health support in England. 1 in 5 young people have a mental health problem, but last year only a third of them were able to get treatment. These stats are from our Big Mental Health Report, out today. With support from Centre for Mental Health we’ve brought together data about mental health problems, stigma and discrimination, alongside real people’s experiences into one annual report, to give a full picture of the state of mental health in England and Wales right now. The report demonstrates the scale of the mental health crisis which cuts across all areas of life – from housing, to benefits, employment and more. Alongside other mental health charities, we’re using this report to call for a cross-government mental health plan in England. One that puts prevention at its heart and has a fair share of the additional NHS funding promised. We need the UK government to act now to make sure no mind is left behind. Good news! Blue skies are returning🌞 Why have the UK skies have been so grey lately? Well, we’ve got something called “anticyclonic gloom” to thank. It’s a high-pressure system that has parked itself over us, trapping cold, damp air and creating a thick layer of low clouds, mist, and fog. The UK isn’t a stranger to weather like this in Autumn. However, it’s been a particularly long stretch, with some parts of the country seeing just 12 minutes of sunshine over 11 days. So there’s no wonder some of us might have been feeling a bit gloomy. The good news is, the ‘anticyclonic gloom' is expected to clear soon, with brighter days ahead. Some of us might even see the sun this week! Although the weather might be shifting, if your own gloom isn't and those feelings are interfering with your everyday life, we’ve got lots of information about SAD on our website.

Black people are nearly 4 times more likely to be sectioned than white people. Health Secretary Wes Streeting said this disproportionate targeting should “shame us all”. But we're still trying to find the bold and radical changes in the new Mental Health Bill that will address the systemic racism enabled by the Mental Health Act. We’re really excited to see the Mental Health Bill in Parliament after years of campaigning. But this is one of the key areas where we want to see more radical reform before the Bill is published. It’s time to make it happen!

“There are so many reasons that I, along with many others, self-harm. Doing it as a means of control is a common reason, which is ironic as for many of us, it then becomes uncontrollable. For me, after a while, it got past the point where it was a choice and more something I ‘had’ to do. ”But learning to manage urges, sit with feelings of upset, hurt or anger and ‘ride the wave’ was a big thing in recovery for me. Distraction techniques such as having a cold shower is a common way that people refocus their attention. This method is a useful way of physically and mentally overcoming the urges. ”But if this doesn’t work for you, don’t despair. It doesn’t mean there is no hope. Sitting with urges and the bad feelings, and I mean literally just sitting, whether on the floor, on a chair or wherever, can be a powerful way of overcoming them. ”I genuinely felt a massive sense of achievement for just riding out the urge. The fact I could overcome something that felt so strong, almost physically dragging me towards self-harming, made me realise the power I could have over my life and the control I could gain from not self-harming.” Read Alison’s full blog https://lnkd.in/gR9Vipiz
